Spain with this squad is the easiest Poland could get in WG1 play-offs.

Heart Award winners announced

The ITF has announced the first four winners of the 2014 Fed Cup Heart Award.

Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska claims her second career Heart Award for her performance in the World Group and World Group II first round category, while the Zone Group I winners are Romania’s Simona Halep, Brazil’s Teliana Pereira and Uzbekistan’s Sabina Sharipova. The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas ties took place in February.

The four Heart Award recipients were decided by a public vote on FedCup.com and FedCup.com/es that saw over 60,000 fans make their selection.

Ten players were initially shortlisted by a judging panel consisting of ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti and a group of former Fed Cup players and members of the international media. All the winners receive a cheque to be donated to their chosen charity.

Radwanska, Halep and Pereira will all receive their awards during the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, and World Group and World Group II play-offs taking place on 19-20 April.

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “There were some outstanding performances during the Fed Cup ties in February, so I would like to congratulate all four players for coming out on top of the public vote.

The Fed Cup Heart Award continues to reward players for the commitment they make to their team and the competition as a whole. I am sure that all the winners will take great pride in making their donations to charity.”

The Fed Cup Heart Award is an ITF initiative that was first presented to USA's Melanie Oudin at the 2009 Fed Cup Final. It aims to recognise players who have represented their country with distinction, shown exceptional courage on court and demonstrated outstanding commitment to their team. A total of five players will be recognised in 2014.
Congrats on winning the Heart Award, Aga !

Well deserved after all the wins she gave Poland in Fed Cup

Poland looks to Radwanska in Spain

By Clive White

BARCELONA, SPAIN: The presence of world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off between Spain and Poland in Barcelona is symbolic of the latter’s determination to reach the World Group proper for the first time in 20 years.

That was the general consensus of most people – including Spain’s captain Conchita Martinez.

The Spanish captain would love to have had her own No. 1 Carla Suarez Navarro present, too, in the Catalan capital, but on this occasion Suarez Navarro felt she couldn’t be distracted from her build-up to the French Open. As a result, Poland are big favourites - whatever their captain Tomasz Wiktorowski may like to think.

It’s a moot point, though, whether Suarez Navarro’s presence would have made a significant difference to the outcome of this match since the older of the Radwanska sisters leads her 3-0 in their head-to-heads while even kid sister Urszula has a 1-0 advantage, albeit from a meeting eight years ago.

“Obviously, the Polish team wants to go to the first division [the World Group] – that’s why Agnieszka’s here,” commented Martinez. "The commitment is remarkable – it’s great. And for us it would be great if we had our best team.”

It was only fitting that the name of Agnieszka Radwanska should have been first out of the silver bowl holding the names of the four singles players at Thursday’s draw which paired her with Spain’s world No. 109 Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

Immediately after the draw she was the recipient of her second Fed Cup Heart Award, an acknowledegment of the courage and commitment this immensely popular player has shown in this competition. She hasn’t missed a tie in the last two years.

Only just 25, she has played in 37 singles and doubles rubbers and only lost six matches. She contributed three points to Poland’s victory against Sweden in the Group Two tie in February. And as Soler was quick to point out, with a nervous laugh, she has never lost on clay in Fed Cup.

Whichever way one looks at it, this tie is fraught with difficulties for Spain. The second singles match between Urszula Radwanska and Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor is a rubber that they could win, but in the only meeting between the two, in Tashkent in 2012, the Pole came out on top in two close sets.

Playing at home on clay is usually a distinct advantage for Spain, but not on this occasion. Clay may not be the preferred surface of the Radwanska sisters – in fact it may surprise some people to learn that, in fact, grass is – but suffice to say that the last time Agnieszka set foot on the red stuff was in the quarterfinals of the French Open last year.

Furthermore, she is the 2006 junior French Open champion so her discomfort on it is minimal, but Spain are going to do their utmost to have temporarily sickened her of the brick dust by Sunday evening. Martinez said their aim was to wear her out in the singles so that she was vulnerable come the doubles, but it’s a tall order.

The full draw is listed below:

Saturday

R1: Silvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP) v Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
R2: Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor (ESP) v Urszula Radwanska (POL)

Sunday

R3: Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor (ESP) v Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
R4: Silvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP) v Urszula Radwanska (POL)
R5: Estrella Cabeza-Candela/Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) v Paula Kania/Alicja Rosolska (POL)

All square in Barcelona on opening day

By Clive White

BARCELONA, SPAIN: One set into the second rubber of this World Group play-off between Spain and Poland, the Pharrell Williams song 'Happy', which was played during every changeover, was beginning to grate not a little on the home crowd - it being far from happy.

Urszula Radwanska was then succeeding quite nicely thank you in the task of emulating her big sister, Agnieszka - who had predictably given Poland the lead in the opening rubber - by taking the first set against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, a big, strong girl from Villena, near Alicante. In the absence of Carla Suarez-Navarro, the responsibility of leading the team had been placed upon the 21-year-old and she did not disappoint.

Somehow Torro-Flor, who was playing in only her third Fed Cup tie, managed to turn the match around with some very aggressive tennis to win emphatically in the end 46 60 61, bringing Conchita Martinez’s team level and giving them real hope that they might yet do the improbable and win this tie.

Urszula Radwanska could have no complaints. She had the opportunities to win this match or at least make more of a match of it but she was unable to grasp them. Incredibly - given the scoreline - she had more break points than the winner – 13 to 10, but could only take two of them whereas Torro-Flor registered an excellent 60 per cent conversion rate.

The key game was unquestionably the third game of the final set when Radwanska had five break points, thanks in part to two double faults from her opponent. Had she won that game the outcome might have been different, but there was no doubt that Torro-Flor had her tail up then and she was going to take some stopping.

The Pole was typically gracious in defeat. "She was very good in the second and third sets and I couldn’t do very much," she said. "She was missing a lot in the first set – maybe she was nervous or something. Her forehand was really good today and she’s really dangerous on the clay courts."

Radwanska certainly put her finger on it with regards to the forehand. The young Spaniard, who practises at the Juan Carlos Ferrero academy, hit an incredible 34 winners with the stroke compared to her opponent’s six. Radwanska also noted that her backhand and movement had improved since she beat the Spaniard in two close sets in Tashkent a couple of years ago.

"It’s amazing [her forehand], the acceleration is remarkable," said Martinez. "If she works a little more in always being in good positions with her legs, her potential, I think, is big."

The opening rubber may have been generally more conclusive, but the 62 62 scoreline in favour of Agnieszka Radwanska was a shade harsh on the world No. 107 Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who from 0-3 down in the first set made a match of it. After all, it isn’t often that a player beaten so comfortably manages to force as many as 10 break points. But Radwanska’s all-round game was working well, particularly the drop shot which was near faultless.

"She tries to play you bad," explained Soler, who couldn’t help but laugh at her predicament. "Yeah, she tries everything to feel you bad. I think she’s only player on the Tour who fills you up with badness."

Nevertheless, Martinez believed that Torro-Flor’s aggressive game could give the world No. 3 problems and Spain’s captain is a big admirer of the Pole, who she said reminds her a lot of Martina Hingis in the astuteness of her game. "With that forehand [of Torro-Flor] you can give problems to everybody," she said. "The thing is Agnieszka is going to bring back the ball a lot more than Urszula did."

Radwanska inspires Polish promotion

By Clive White

BARCELONA, SPAIN: It was nothing like as comfortable as some imagined it would be, but Poland got there in the end, victory in the decisive doubles rubber here in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona on Sunday taking them into the World Group for the first time.

For that, inevitably, they had largely Agnieszka Radwanska to thank, the world No, 3 contributing three points to her country’s cause just as she had done in the Group II win away to Sweden in February. Her 25th birthday was more than a month ago. No matter. She was deservedly given the bumps anyway by her teammates, victory here being the best present she could have asked for.

Now, as then, it was the doubles team of Radwanska and Alicja Rosolska who carried Poland to victory, winning 64 62 against Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Anabel Medina Garrigues. All things considered, the Spanish had done well to take it to a fifth and final rubber since they were without their own No. 1, Carla Suarez Navarro.

Agnieszka Radwanska is normally partnered by her sister Urszula, but the latter did not look back to her best yet here after a shoulder operation in October – although she said she was fully recovered. Whether she was or not, she certainly looked out of sorts, losing both her singles rubbers, the second quite conclusively on Sunday 61 63 in barely an hour to Soler-Espinosa – a win that had given the Spanish hope that they might just win this tie.

Agnieszka, however, had other ideas. She is an exceptional tennis player who, her captain Tomasz Wiktorowski, thinks, will one day win a grand slam title. Realistically, she needs greater support to advance much further in the Fed Cup, never mind win it. Almost single-handedly steering her team into the World Group is one thing, but to achieve the ultimate dream of actually winning the competition requires a much greater team effort than Poland can, at the moment, summon.

The quality Radwanska showed above all throughout this tie was consistency, which never sounds very exciting but is of paramount importance when it comes to winning major titles – just ask Spain’s captain Conchita Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion.

“She can do pretty much everything that she wants to do,” said Martinez. “She can serve okay - pretty good - she can volley, she can drop shot, she can run, but what I like the most is that she’s one of the most consistent – or the most consistent player - on the tour. She always wins the matches that she has to. Can she win a grand slam? Why not.”

Another quality that she oozes with is desire and it was never more obvious than in the final game of the match when with poor Soler-Espinosa looking to hold for the first time in the match at 40-love up, Radwanska refused to let go. “We’re Polish, we’re tough, so we’re not giving up any points,” she said proudly.

At 5-2 up, other players might have happily waited for the opportunities that would surely follow in the next game or two, but instead she and Rosolska grittily hung in there to pull level before Radwanska tenaciously set up match point with an angled forehand drive volley. Needless to say, when Spain eventually succumbed it was to another cleverly angled Radwanska shot. “She was anticipating everything and kept surprising us,” remarked Medina Garrigues.

Just as Martinez feared, the problem of facing an opponent who has a nasty habit of always returning one more ball proved the undoing of Spain’s young new No. 1, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, but at least she went down playing her natural attacking game against Agnieszka Radwanska.

The scoreline of 63 62 sounded straightforward enough, but it was a compliment to the 21-year-old Spaniard that Radwanska needed much of her wile and guile to avenge her sister Urszula’s defeat on Saturday to “Tita”, as the Spanish tend to call girls christened Maria-Teresa.

Just as in that match, the Spaniard dictated many of the rallies with her huge forehand, but Radwanska kept getting the ball back until Torro-Flor eventually succumbed, probably as much through frustration as anything.

Radwanska, it has to be said, was not at her best. Her first serve was misfiring terribly and even her drop shot, which had been almost flawless against Soler-Espinosa, too frequently fell short in the damp conditions. The service stats said it all: Radwanska’s first serve was only 41 per cent compared to Torro-Flor’s 76 per cent and yet the Pole still managed to win 67 per cent of the points on it while Torro-Flor’s return was a meagre 38 per cent.

The girl from Villena, near Alicante will have much to ponder on when she boards her flight to a tournament in Marrakesh on Monday morning and as much as the defeat may hurt now, on reflection, she will probably view this as a good learning experience.
