A Streetcar Named Desire
Apocalypse Now
Goodfellas
Requiem For A Dream

Off the top of my head.

Biased because it's my fave, but 12 Monkeys deserved an Oscar too.

But there were a lot of great directors in that period that won few oscars if any: you already mentioned Wilder and Kazan, I'd add Hitchcock to that for sure, and in the sixties Kubrick, just to name a few. Can't see too many directors today making movies better than those guys made. I'm also more of a David Lean fan than you apparently are. I loved Lawrence of Arabia, and thought Bridge over the River Kwai was pretty good as well.
Oh I like early Lean's movies, actually
And who doesn't like Holden and Sir Alec, seriously I like BOTRK too.

Just that I think for the movie of 1962, I prefer
Long Day’s Journey into Night or The Manchurian Candidate

than the winner Lawrence of Arabia.

For 1957, as I've said, I prefer

Kazan’s A Face in the Crowd or Alexander Mackendrick’s Sweet Smell of Success

than the winner The Bridge on the River Kwai

Those 2 movies weren't nominated for a single category

How about 'Witness for the Prosecution'? That's also one helluva movie.

Re: Movies that should have won the Oscar but didn't

Hollywood is in a bad era right now.

2013: Django unchained > Argo
2005: Walk the line (wasn't even nominated) = Brokeback Mountain > Crash (even though I loved Crash, but forgot it soon too)
2002: Gangs of New York > Chicago
1999: The Thin red line > Shakespeare in love
1994: The Shawshank redemption = Forrest Gump

I was just about to write this. The soundtrack to Pan's Labyrinth is even better than the film.
