Crash winning best picture.

Ridiculous melodrama with an obvious message delivered with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. If the ceremony were five years later, Brokeback Mountain would have won.

The Artist... zzz. I was literally bored to death while watching the movie. I enjoyed the performances by the cast but the movie itself was terrible. I'm not a fan of silent films, despite being deaf and I supposed to appreciate it more

Yeah, I sort of got the impression that if you took away the novelty of the film not having sound it didn't really have anything going for it. I guess someone who is used to viewing films without sound would be in the best position to make that judgement

They are all pretty shit when you look at the films that won before these 10.

This is a good point; although Shakespeare in Love almost single-handedly ruins that period.

It's a tribute to old cinema not an experimental movie. It's also not like other silent movies because they would not have ended like the way The Artist did. It is about the evolution of art and in many ways the way people do things and trying to look at it from a different perspective.

If you think that's the point of silent films, you've sadly missed the point. As usual.

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

Haven't seen Argo and The Artist. Of those I've seen I'd have to say Crash is the most seriously overrated. So was Slumdog Millionaire at the time, but it didn't take itself as seriously, which makes it not as bad in my book. The Hurt Locker was also overrated, but it was gripping and kind of interesting, so I can't really say it was bad. Million Dollar Baby was a bit corny, but I give it some points for putting euthanasia on the agenda. The King's Speech was quite good as a "small film", not really oscar material, but well acted and well directed, and certainly a lot better than a lot of crap that has won over the years.

LOTR, The Departed and No Country for Old Men were all great, far better than anything in the 10 years before this. I find it hard to believe that anybody seriously thinks the preceding decade was better, the average level of the last 10 years was far higher IMO. Forest Gump won an oscar? Give me a break

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

Shh, Forrest Gump is a good movie

I would say that the movies that have won best picture oscars in the most recent ten years are certainly less iconic than the ten years previously. Films like Gladiatior, American Beauty, Beautiful Mind, Forrest Gump, Titanic The English Patient and Braveheart seem to be embedded in the cultural consciousness in ways that more recent winners aren't. Which doesn't necessarily mean that they are better movies, I suppose, but probably means that long term they are more likely to be remembered as classics. I feel like a lot of the more recent winners will be forgotten for some reason.

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

Maybe those movies were iconic with the general public, but I don't think critics and hardcore movie buffs were all that enthused by them. IMO American Beauty and Schindler's List were the standout movies of the preceding decade, but I don't think they were as good as the best of the last 10 years.

Of course the real test is going to be which movies stand the test of time. In that sense I'd have to admit that there has been a decline since about the end of the 70s, with a high proportion of winners prior to that still being regarded as classics, whereas a lot of stuff since is kind of

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

Yeah, gone are the days when the best picture was also universally known, iconic and a huge movie.

Nowadays you have mindless money-making blockbusters and the intelligent, Oscar worthy movies.

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

bloated epics has been there before, like in the 50s and 60s, but it is said that Jaws (1975) is the start of the summer blockbuster trend; before this summer wasn't thought as a good season for movies. Jaws' incredible success changed all that.

The trend of 'divergence'(of elite and pop) is similar in literature(novels), no? Just that it happened earlier..

Re: Worst Oscar best Picture in 10 years

Why does everybody hate Crash? I think it's because so many others love it or loved it when it first came out. A couple of scenes in the film are very powerful. I don't see why having an obvious message handled in an open but at the same time deft way is such a bad thing. It wasn't as sentimental and probably not as touching as Brokeback but it was addressed a larger issue in a way not often seen in mainstream cinema. Plus, it was more entertaining than Brokeback. I love both movies but I was glad that Crash won.

I agree that Argo was underwhelming. I was expecting more but it was still quite a good film.

The Artist was pretty bad. I hate films with completely unsympathetic protagonists, rob me of dialogue too and you've totally lost me. I think I went to see it for free. I think people who are really, really into the history of cinema would really enjoy (i.e. the Academy!) but even for those of us who are merely quite interested in the history of cinema, it was quite the snoozefest. I really tried to enjoy it and take something, anything from it but a few scenes of insight or entertainment don't make a film.

I haven't seen No Country, Slumdog or Hurt Locker. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down to watch either of the first two and opted for something else at the last second!
