Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol5

Did you watch Nadal in Montreal? He played great in that tournament and good in Cincy, though admittedly not quite on the same level. Nadal is my favorite, so obviously I've seen him as dull. I've never understood that assertion. I know every non fan thinks it's cute to say, but he has such a specific game and has so many great matches with top players. It's really just become hater-ism at this point. He's been more aggressive on return and more quick to come to net. It's like, what else do you want from the dude? Murray is a tall, strong guy who still wants to chase every ball instead of being more offensive. If he continues to play this way he'll never have a fully healthy season again.

I've never understood that Nadal is dull either, I couldn't stan for a dull player.

Admittedly in retrospect I can see into people thinking it in 2011 perhaps, he was very frustrating to watch then.

Any player is frustrating to watch when he's beating your fave. And that's all it is really. This is a golden era for mens tennis. Once "the big four" are gone everyone will refer to the time when they were dominating as "the good old days" and talk about how boring whoever is on top then is in comparison to them. A bit like after Borg, Connors, McEnroe and Lendl were gone. People don't appreciate greatness when it's around, but they sure do when it's gone.

2011 was just an incredible year for Novak. Nadal was looking ready to dominate, but Novak halted all that. As frustrating as it was to watch it added a nice dent in the dynamics. And it makes his comeback this year even more impressive. I wouldn't want any player, even a favorite, mauling the competition for years.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol5

I thought Nadal played utter shit in 2011 though.

Especially in his matches vs Novak. Maybe I'm just being bitter but everything always just seemed to be landing at the service line invited Nole to step in, Rafa never seemed to play aggressive in those matches.

I didn't mind it when Federer was dominating. But yeah, from a neutrals perspective it's better that there are several people in the mix. Still, even a 6-0/6-0 can be interesting in terms of seeing how good a master can be when he's at the top of his game. It's a bit like, say, Usain Bolt or S.A. Fraser-Price. You know beforehand that the're going to win it but it's still great entertainment.

He wasn't at his peak in 2011. But come on, Novak was playing at an incredible level. Taking the ball early, fantastic movement, very few UEs, an improved forehand. It should not have taken Nadal this long to alter his game against Novak, but hey, at least he found a way. Federer has yet to turn the tide against Nadal.

I mean, I guess I'm more of a fan of the game than any player, but I wouldn't want a fav to just roll over the tour for a few years. Watching Federer dominate was amazing on one level, but it was pretty obvious he was so clearly above his opponents. I just don't think utter dominance is good for the game.

Probably not. I loved it with Fed because he's a personal fave, but now with Serena I'm often rooting for her opponent, no matter who it is, just because I think it would be more interesting if the outcome wasn't always a foregone conclusion.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol5

The problem with the men's game right now (even though it's infinitely better than the women's game) is that it's getting further away from being what tennis should be about (exciting shotmaking) and more towards a straight-up battle of endurance. Sure, Nadal might be technically at a very high level and he's obviously an incredible athlete, but that doesn't mean it's exciting to watch from an aesthetic standpoint. Honestly, even as a Djokovic fan, I'm starting to detest his matches against Nadal and Murray, because they so often turn into boring one-dimensional grindfests, and usually have UGLY W-UE ratios to boot (though the slobbering commentators always fail to point that out). Even though I dislike Federer for his arrogance and lack of class, I'm starting to hope he can have a resurgence purely to provide more exciting matches, his matches against Djokovic and his ones against Nadal (when he doesn't bend over from the first ball) have been easily the best of the last couple of years imo. (Well, if we're doing preferences then I'd rather have Delpo or Tsonga finally break into the elite, but I'm starting to run out of hope on that )

And honestly, even though the ATP commentators and journalists (who are honestly the most slavering of ANY sport I know) are constantly going on about how this is a "golden era", I actually do know quite a few casual tennis fans who've been bemoaning how even grasscourt tennis thesedays is filled with boring interminable rallies that usually end in errors, and people saying they found the Wimbledon final boring. That might just be my experience though. TV ratings in most Western countries have been falling in recent years too I think.

(And I realise I've done a complete 180 from when I was negatively contrasting the WTA with the ATP earlier, but still )

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol5

Surface homogenization has indeed gone too far now though. They did need to be slowed down, but the fact that they are still continuing to slow them down is worrying, it should have stopped a couple of years ago. And it should still be that there are a few lightning fast surfaces.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol5

I guess it depends on what you want to see. I only started watching the game six years ago. Shot-making is still important. Athleticism is just as important however. Every sport evolves and changes through the years. I appreciate that there are many different types of players and match-ups, but tennis depending greatly on athleticism was an inevitable evolution of the sport. I would like more faster courts, but I don't think it'll change as much of the game as people think. The rackets and greater athletics imo has had more to do with the changes.

dsanders, how can you be a Novak fan and then call (out of all people) Federer arrogant and classless?? Yes, Novak is funny, but everything about him SCREAMS arrogance
