Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

Yay!!!!!!! Maria breaks for 6-1 2nd set at Ad Maria from 30-0 to 30-15 to 40-15 (double fault) to 40-40. Great job Maria. The match was 1 hour 37 minutes long.

I wish Maria was wearing her visor instead of the headband though.

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

It was very valuable to kiri win the first set by how complicated the game was presented. At another time would have lost the set and the match on this surface, then the second set was much easier

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

Kiri wins 7-6(5) 6-1!!

that was over very quickly at the end!
Maria only converted 2 of 13 breakpoints in the first, but 3 of 5 in the second set, where she finally could take her early chances to run away with it. She also served very well, I'm pretty impressed!! 11 aces, some of them on the 2nd serve!

She obviously needed the first set to get used to the grass and played way better in the 2nd

a rest day tomorrow for Kiri and in the 2nd round she will face the winner of Baltacha/Kristyna Pliskova

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

1st set was tough and could have gone either way, but then Maria was stronger in the TB and rolfstomped the cute Bojana in the second set, showing who's the queen

11 aces, Maria is a service goddess

And she finished her match just before "L'amour est dans le pré" starts (some farmers searching a girl on the TV, it's quite epic ), Kiri is so perfect

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

You guys said pretty much everything about the match.
Anyway, I really think that grass suits Kiri's game quite well in this moment of her career, last year results surely weren't flukes, but now pressure is on her, hopefully that won't affect her at all.
Next match is against Pliskova or Baltacha... due the quality of the field this is actually a gift from heaven, Maria must make it to the QF.

It's not too sunny in England so expect to see plenty of the Kiri headband this grass court season.

Nice win for Kiri the first set was tough and I was impressed with her opponent especially how she crowded Kiri's serve. That was surorising for me to see. Good serving from Maria I hope it contunues.

Besides Maria's serving, the thing that stood out for me was was her defending, which is a bit of an odd thing on a grass court.

For future matches, it'd probably be a good idea for Maria to be a bit more on the offensive though.

Yes absolutely, all those break points and set points sometimes at 0-40 on bojos serve not taken she needs to get more aggressive but there is room to improve and it's her first match on grass so hopefully she will get better as she goes on.

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

Indeed Maria was quite defensive in the first set, on the other hand Jovanovski was hitting hard without too many mistakes. It changed in 2nd set.

Re: Maria on the British lawn - Eastbourne & Wimbledon

From the very beginning it was clear that she didn't feel confident during rallies, she was playing way too passive but I guess it's normal to be kinda cautios when going for your shots since it was her first match on this surface. I expect her to be more aggressive and take more risks in the future (as she actually did in the 2nd set).
