Maria really has nothing to lose on Saturday.

I agree, many Serena fans are trying to put pressure on Masha because she's the defending champion. But if anything the pressure is all on Serena - first RG final since 2002, blazed through the draw dropping a handful of games. I'm pretty sure I heard Jo Durie say (no matter how delusional) that if Masha actually sticks with her throughout the match she could really cause Serena's on-court mentality some problems

That is the key. She cant be down 4/0 in 10 minutes and give Serena breathing space. She has a chance if she can keep it tight. Maria has already survived a number of tough situations at this event. Serena hasnt.

Re: Roland Garros 2013 : La reine Maria de retour dans son jardin

I really hope Maria goes onto court feeling no pressure and knowing she's got nothing to lose. If she plays without pressure I think she has a chance to at least make it competitive. But somehow she never seems to go on court with this mentality against Serena, even though she's lost the last 3099340 matches

Re: Roland Garros 2013 : La reine Maria de retour dans son jardin

We all know Maria hasn't beaten Serena since 2004 and has lost her last 12 matches to Serena.

However, if we discount 2011 Rome where Vika retired, Maria also hasn't beaten Vika on an outdoor court since 2009 Beijing. Maria has lost her last 6 outcourt matches (all HC) to Vika.

One step at a time, but today's win over Vika on an outdoor court is a bigger step than usual.

Agreed. I just want her to go out there and give it her all win or lose.

This being her 8th slam final is a nice achievement too.

I didn't watch it but by all accounts Serena played lights-out against Errani. 40/12 or some ridiculous ratio. We can hope she peaked too early .

I think Maria's focus has been to somehow improve her body and tennis tools in ways to be able to beat Serena. Enormous time and effort has been put forth. She has a lot to lose, whether many recognize it or not.

Re: Roland Garros 2013 : La reine Maria de retour dans son jardin

Serena's last 10 opponents have visited her bakery

Hard to imagine Maria not going there as well, but please for fucks sake, all I am asking for is a Doha type score, is that so hard?

Please be focused from the first point and try to hold your first service game and not go down 0-5 in 10 minutes

Re: Roland Garros 2013 : La reine Maria de retour dans son jardin

Just wanted to say to all the Maria fans that whatever happens on Saturday its amazing how great Sharapova has become on clay, and how she fought her way through these past two matches. If she wins on Saturday it will be well earned having gone through a tough Jankovic and Azarenka. I'm always more cautious as others when Serena plays no matter who it is and don't forget, the previous two majors they played the favorite lost. Serena was the fave at Wimbledon that year and Maria was the fave at the Australian Open. Might not mean much given form and the recent history, but stranger things have happened in tennis. Best of luck on Saturday.

Best of luck to Serena as well. I am truly happy for her that she has managed to turn her career around after 2004-2006/7 and to come back from a life threatning injury in 2011. She is probably the best player of all time, no matter that the stats say and has fought through so much of her career and life.

Once again, she has proven so many people wrong by being unbeatable on clay this year and not many people lose in R1 of a Slam and win it the next year. It's sheer will power and after nearly 15 years of professional career the fire in her is still burning like she is 20

Aside from her pride (which she's already lost a lot against Serena), I respectfully disagree. She has nothing to lose on Saturday. No one expects her to win. In so many ways, Maria is right back to where she was nine years ago as a 17 year old Wimbledon Finalist: the heavy underdog. All she can do is play her best, and then we'll see how the chips fall.

A Grand Slam final is a tennis celebration. Lets enjoy this final between these two wonderful women, who without a doubt are the two best players in the world.
