Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

Naw, not weird at all, as these things are cyclical.

As I see it, every era/generation has its share of intense periods of competition, regardless of surface.
The same applies to those lull periods as well.
During those lulls, players retire, nurse injuries, experience lengthy recoveries, or the association simply experiences a general changing of the guards.
During some of these periods, when the competition isn't as intense is when breakout players forge ahead and establish themselves, or the current elites improve. In this case, the current elites improved.
It's obvious that both Serena and Sharapova have put in practice time to hone their clay court skills.
It's what champions do (constantly think of improving).

Why wouldn't this include the clay surface, and why would it be considered weird?

Serena and Sharapova just happen to be two players who have weathered the times and forged ahead.
Who says players have to possess excellent clay court technique to experience clay court success?
Both possess styles that do well on most surfaces anyway, and their clay court techniques are good enough to defeat even the so-called expert/career dirt-ballers.

So 'no', not weird at all.

Btw,
I recall reading an article around the time Serena turned pro, where Serena mentioned that she practices mostly on clay courts at home, IIRC.
Do any other Serena fans out there recall this article, or Serena saying this?

Your question makes no sense, as I never said that Serena is playing, "the best clay court tennis of her career".

Maybe you meant to ask a different question.

Also, didn't Serena play more than one opponent en-route to the Rome Final?
Again, maybe you meant to ask a different question.

I will wait until you post whatever you honestly meant to ask, before I answer.
Please be clear so that there is no misconstruing your question.

Btw,
"Current elites" was in reference to Serena and Sharapova.

Serena is developing the conventional clay game as years go by, Was very surprised by the way she played in Rome she was using bunt forehand and slice backhand while sliding to keep the point going. Sharapova plays hard court tennis on clay court and it works.

oh yes. she also faced carla suarez navarro in the quarterfinals. what a toughie.

noone she faced in that tournament is even close to capriati's caliber on clay. nor do they present the matchup difficulties and competition capriati does to serena on the surface or any other. so who cares who she faced? they are all irrelevant weak era clay scrubs.

english isnt my first language so maybe im not presenting myself correctly. or maybe im not understanding you correctly. but i think you can understand what im trying to say. hopefully.
LOL if you are gonna refer to a good clay courter you can chose other players. Capriati is as good in Clay as Sharapova in Grass. Capriati is a lot like Clijsters, they play the same way in every surface.

Very true. He says Serena is no clay courter but says Capriatti is, he has no clue what he is talking about. Serena beat her the first time they played on clay in 1999. They met 6 times on clay splitting 3-3 H2H. Of those 6 matches she defeated Serena at Rome and RG and Serena defeated her at Rome and RG. Obviously he is trolling because of the 22 posts 20 of them are obnoxiously complaining about how weak the WTA is.

Yes, Serena's clay game has improved (as well as Sharapova's).
And yes, it has lead to Serena's current dominance over the last few clay tournaments that she's played.
She's won on various clay surfaces; one of them being true red clay.

Why is there a dispute over these facts?

Serena is playing straight set matches (in her wins) and relinquishing very few games in the process.
She's also enjoying a winning streak---the longest of her career.

Does it really matter whether you consider these clay court specialists "tough" or not?
Or like Capriati or not? Why is Capriati even brought up in this conversation?
Btw, Capriati wasn't considered the best clay court player either. And Serena was beating her on that surface years ago.

The fact is Serena is defeating her opponents on their best surface, and doing it convincingly; whereas in the past, she'd win sometimes, but most often play tough three setters.
And, Sharapova is performing convincingly as well.

I don't see the problem here.

Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

I don't find it weird but sad. Like really? Why can't other players step up? I mean, we had more interesting clay season in the last decade even though Justine won almost everything. These two aren't made for clay yet noone on the tour can bring their best tennis to compete against them is just ridiculous.

How would WTA do with clay season when Serepova are gone? Cut it to 4 weeks like grass?
