Mid way 1st set, I felt my left hip was getting more and more stuck and it went from bad to worse. At some moments, landing on my left leg after my serve, getting ready to return, I felt it was getting stiff and it got harder and I felt it was something that by continuing I would only make it worse. And the way I was moving, you can’t play tennis in a satisfying way. So then it’s hard to make such a decision but I think it was the right one with the Australian Open coming up.
One week before start of the AO. How worried are you?
You can’t exclude anything of course, but I have a good feeling. I think If I can rest for a couple of days, tomorrow I’ll go to the hospital to get an MR of course to be sure there isn’t a tear. But I think that it will only be some sort of a sprain and I hope that I can pick up my racket again in a week and start training again.
How hard is this? You worked for months to be fit again, you were fitter than ever.
It’s hard. But the injuries I had last year were a lot worse. Then I felt immediately that it was bad.
But now with this, there are more players that are on court with minor injuries. It’s just the timing that is really bad but of course with Melbourne coming up it was the best decision to not continue in this match.
