On an economic level, almost all of the problems Britain has today stem from her government's decisions. She made us the most dependent country in the world on banks and the financial sector, she tied our fortunes to the markets, and she was the one who made the unemployment benefits bill rocket.

I don't know what you mean by saying 'she broke the hard divide between Britain high classes and lower/working classes.' If anything it became exacerbated. On one hand, you'd associate Thatcher with yuppies, deregulation of banks, laissez-faire capitalism etc as well as the destruction of manufacturing and industry and rising unemployment.

LOL do you even realize that under Labour before Thatcher Britain was such a basket case that it had to go begging bowl in hand to the IMF? As for the current one isn't it the fault of Gordon Brown/Blair?

Yes, they're at fault for continuing Thatcher's policies. Doesn't change the fact that she was the one who ushered them in in the first place.

Did Great Britain not have major problems before Thatcher? Would the country have been better off as it was? I assume you live there and can answer that question better than I can.

Same thing happened to us with Bill Clinton who reversed his stance and gave China MFN status with the USA.

I did mention business deregulation; some, more knowledgeable than I, have admitted that more British joined the middle class under her policy than not.
Also, her accessing to highest political office in Britain symbolically broke the hard divide between work class and Britain high society, because her father was from a working class.

People holding this notion are people from both the left and right in the USA, although some on the left had reservation about how she dealt with the labor Union, they did admit it was necessary at that point.
Thrash was not being picked up, London looked like a poor third world country capital with unsanitary public places and streets.

With that said, I also said she was a divisive figure because the very reason your cited.

Class/economic divisions increased under Thatcher. Under socialist policies countries tend to be poorer but more equitable as in her predecessor Labour governments whereas capitalist policies increase both inequality and overall wealth.

So I guess you would have preferred Britain being a basket case right as it was on track under Labour before her. I think you are just 21/22.

I didn't have a particularly positive or negative opinion about her but the irony of her getting a state funeral is amusing.

You should know not to say anything bad about her in this thread. Good luck to you.

This is possibly the biggest myth of all In the late 70s, there was a deep but brief recession (much briefer than the recession of recent years), and by 1979 when Thatcher was elected, the recession was already over and the economy was growing fairly strongly. Although the economy was then plunged straight back into recession in the early 1980s because of Thatcher's policies, and only got out of it by ending regulation of the financial sector (which, again, might have brought good results in the short-term but we can see in recent years what its long-term effects were).

But anyway, in political terms, even though she was unbeatable at the time, public opinion of her has soured so much over time that she's made her party near-unelectable.

Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies. Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.
this is what i assosiate thatcher with. i do not see how can anyone admire her for her power and determination when she used them to support the racist regime in south africa or pinochet or khmer rouge. i can think of other people who had power and determination and admiring them would be silly to put it mildly. you don't admire people just for that.

i am far more inclined to post a bye bitch smilie than a rip.
