Re: STUTTGART 2013: Aint no backseat in my Porsche!

6 hours nelsondan.
I think the earliest start of matches is 12 noon local time, so 6AM New York time.

I must have looked at the draw incorrectly then. I thought, even with the bye, she'd have 5 matches to win.

That's not so bad then. She had no issues playing 3 days in a row last year against 3 great opponents to win the title.

True, and I can't imagine her having a match quite like the physically/mentally draining one against Stosur, so she should be even fresher for her matches this time around.

And thanks for the NY to Stuttgart time conversion info saves me from having to look that up now

Sliding has always scared me. I realize it's an important tactic to use on clay, but when I see players do it, I have visions of feet getting caught and ankles getting rolled. That's why I never minded Maria not sliding all these years.

And don't even get me started on players that slide on hard courts. Just thinking about Novak and Kim doing that time and time again makes me cringe. It's amazing to me that tennis players don't wreck their ankles more often.

Re: STUTTGART 2013: Aint no backseat in my Porsche!

Nah clay is only grueling in the physical sense of the body, matches on it aren't really tough for Maria these days as she's in the best physical shape in her career.
It's much easier on the joints and stuff but I know what you are saying. Although the top surface makes clay very easy to slide on, you are more likely to roll an ankle by refusing to slide on it.

I see your point but on the other hand I think it is more risky trying to run with big steps towards the ball rather than just slide to it . Her backhand slide is what got her to win so many matches on clay last year.

Re: STUTTGART 2013: Aint no backseat in my Porsche!

So guys, Maria in her practices has been practising sliding on clay, a video is coming from someone there and I'm sure it'll end up here.

I don't think she'll be able to slide to the FH consistently, but it looks like she'll be able to do it enough to really solve that flaw in her game.

That one wasn't the most convincing but we'll see how it is in competitive action and it can improve over the course of the clay season.
Don't remind me, the legendary serve-&-volley-pova's only appearance so far

Agree. Look at some of those girls lumbering around ala cow on ice on the clay last weekend, it's just awkward.
