My hope/wish is not to get bageled OR breadsticked, but I guess that is a bit ambitious

Serena could certainly name the score if she wanted. If she's in a mean-spirited mood, we could see a repeat of the Olympic gold medal match. Or maybe Serena will be feeling more generous and compassionate, playing in her town, in front of her family. Then she might give Maria a few more games and we'd see a score similar to Istanbul. That would be a best case scenario for Maria.

Generally, though, these Serena/Maria matches are glorified exhibitions. Serena is there to put on a show, entertaining the crowd, doing what she wants. And Maria is the hapless bystander, there to set things up for Serena's next big moment, like a magician's assistant.

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Oh my, some of you are already acting ridiculous. I'm sure the biggest drama queens here will actually be the most upset when Maria loses.

I've thought about it as an objective person, and I realised that I really don't see Maria winning. There is just no reason to believe she would judging from their last matches.

I do, however, hope she will show up fighting, and go down fighting. I would be more than happy with a tough two setter.

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Maria may well end up losing today. There are a couple of "I-told-you" people here just waiting for that.
One one hand, recent matches history would lead to that conclusion.

On the other hand, Maria is the only player out there that in my view has the package to beat Serena. The challenge to achieve the result is that such package has to be in top operating conditions on match day. And, maybe, hope in a bit of a simultaneous letdown from Little Big Sister Williams.

Such combination has not really happened for a long time, but the level of pessimistic predictions piling up here starts getting annoying.

One may be leading head to head by 25-0, but every match starts from zero and I hope today Maria will find a way to bite Serena on every shot. And should disaster strike again, Maria will just move on trying to be again the last one standing at every tournament.

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Sharapova is very likely to lose today. I think we all know that. So the overwrought, condescending diatribe is unness.

"And Maria is the hapless bystander, there to set things up for Serena's next big moment, like a magician's assistant". Who would think to say something so damn over the top and aggressively morbid? Well, Mexicola of course

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Though the outcome of the match is inevitable, I wish Maria would see every match vs Serena as a chance to improve and maybe finally to get a win over her. And she doesn't put too much pressure on herself to prove anything. Losing to one of the greatest players ever and reigning number one is everything but embarrassing.
