Yeah, despite all the drama I wrote here and on twitter (a lot of it joking) I think she played bad but still better than some sets I remember from early rounds in IW.

I agree, Chrissie-fan. Wind and Maria don't get on. So she did well to survive especially avoiding multiple DFs which I was more or less anticipating. Maria will step up when it is necessary. Her biggest obstacle in this tourney is Serena.

She played better than her opponent. That's all that's required.

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Rather funny how her serve is still solid in the heaviest wind but cant do anything from the ground besides useless mug pushing.

Well, Maria plays a high risk game with only very small margins for errors under normal circumstances. Some wanted her to be more agressive today, but if she had been she might have ended up making as many UE as you get from Kvitova on a bad day.

Re: Miami 2013: Hometown Glory?

Vesnina is a good player don't know why many people aren't giving her credit here and saying it was all because of Maria's bad play. Vesnina isn't the kind of player who will sit back and try to grind Maria down, she was up on the baseline taking her shots early putting Maria on the backfoot. The conditions didn't help either.

All this made for a very scrappy win. Even with Maria playing her pusher style tennis still made it difficult for Vesnina, dragged 30+ errors out of her. Sure this gameplan won't cut it against the Serenas, Li Nas and Azarenkas of the world but she did what she needed to do to reach the next round.

I watched that match before the Sharapova match. Cirstea was incredible, especially in the second half of the match. To be fair, I think that Kerber had a problem with her back, but Cirstea was nevertheless impressive, especially considering the conditions.
