Liz Taylor. Though Cyd's gams were a class of it's own.

THW won an Oscar, on a sound recording
That year the contenders were;
http://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000003/1942
Best Actress in a Leading Role
WINNER
Suspicion: Joan Fontaine
NOMINEES
The Little Foxes: Bette Davis
Hold Back the Dawn: Olivia de Havilland
Blossoms in the Dust: Greer Garson
Ball of Fire: Barbara Stanwyck
Haven't seen HBTD and BIND, but on this list I would pick Barbara. But yes, Vivien deserved
an nomination. Don't get why Joan won it either
WB;
Best Actress in a Leading Role
WINNER
Kitty Foyle: Ginger Rogers
NOMINEES
The Letter: Bette Davis
Rebecca: Joan Fontaine
The Philadelphia Story: Katharine Hepburn
Our Town: Martha Scott
OT? Who've seen it? I guess Vivien deserved to be nominated too
But I think Maggie Sullavan for 'The Shop Around the Corner' was a better
choice. (was that movie eligible for that year? Or should she have competed against
Vivien on GWTW?)
Well, she won the Oscar twice anyway

Re: Which old-school Hollywood actress was most beautiful at her peak?
That Hamilton Woman was eligible for 1942; Waterloo Bridge for 1941.
Granted that she won in 1940, those two roles of hers stand out and are pretty phenomenal; hence why I was wondering why she was 'robbed' of nominations for them. The fact that they both were realeased so close to her winning role had some impact, I guess. However, especially Waterloo Bridge and her portrayal of Myra is just divine and jaw-dropping. That was her best movie ever; she was even better in it than as Scarlett. Moreover, she cited it as her personal favourite. Initially, Olivier was supposed to play her counterpart which would have been exquisite.
P.S. Yeap, she is 2 out of 2(nominations/awards) but she deserved more. I wish she was cast as Rebecca and her illness didn't prevent her from finishing 'Elephant Walk'

I don't think so. That didn't stop Bette Davis from getting so many nominations after winning twice. Or Luise Rainer winning back-to-back.

THW is considered Vivien's best role by many. I think it beats Joan in Suspicion, in fact
I haven't seen HBTD and BITD, but I rate Greer's acting ability very highly.
Olivia, not that much
So I guess Vivien was 'robbed' here.

I think Kat was overrated in TPS. Joan in Rebecca too for that matter. Martha, haven't seen
the movie. Vivien really could have been nominated, at least.
But, as I've said earlier, if 'The Shop Around the Corner' was also eligible (Jan. 12, 1940 release date),
Margaret Sullavan should've won it. That was one major snub in Oscar history, imo(If it was eligible for 1940 Oscar,
Best Actress in a Leading Role
WINNER
Gone with the Wind: Vivien Leigh
NOMINEES
Dark Victory: Bette Davis
Love Affair: Irene Dunne
Ninotchka: Greta Garbo
Goodbye, Mr. Chips: Greer Garson
One of the strongest entries ever Still, Maggie FTW!!

So, you disagreeing is supposed to make my choice irrelevant? Please get over yourself.

Re: Which old-school Hollywood actress was most beautiful at her peak?
The old Hollywood actresses had so much more class and beauty over today's Hollywood actresses
