Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

Something I was wondering just recently...

I know that the double surname is based on the mother's and father's last name, but it seems only that female players use it?

For example, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Carla Suarez Navarro, etc.

But you don't see this for male players: Rafael Nadal, JC Ferrero, David Ferrer...

Why is that?

Only female player I can think of who didn't use the double surname was Conchita Martinez...

Re: Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

what about Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, or Daniel Gimeno Traver? Also I remember Garbine's name being listed as Muguruza Blanco when she first came on tour.

So yeah I dunno wtf is up with that either.

Re: Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

I think it's just a personal choice of the players and quite frankly the usual way is to give both your names and first names in official regards. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez must be the only one who does it on WTA though.

That's not true. You have:
Emilio Sanchez Vicario, Daniel Gimeno Traver, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, Albert Ramos Vinolas, Ivan Navarro Pastor... to name a few

Also, Nadal is Nadal Parera. They choose to put both last names or just one out of commodity

Okay.

It just seems the top male players go by one surname, including your avatar!

Re: Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

Guillermo Garcia Lopez is another male.

It is true the WTA players seem to use both surnames more often than the ATP players, for reasons unknown...

Re: Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

Hispanic people use both the father's and the mother's surname, it is up to personal choice to use both of them or just the father's.

Re: Question about Spanish surnames for female vs. male players

in spain you have both surnames from father and mother. you can choose both or just the first one(you can change their order too). maybe many girls put the both surnames because they love their mums
