Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

A mystery:

In Biographies we have this player:
ISAAC, FRANCINE (nee Francine ????)
Belgium
Married a Maurice Isaac by 1923

In 1923 event at the Chatreau d’Ardennes.
Ranked #2 in Belgium in 1932-she also entered the French that year. Playing as late as 1954. The NYT incorrectly lists her as “Marie” in 1936, but it is Francine
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....&postcount=981

----------------

She born in 1902.

I think me too that "Marie Isaac" , of whom we have results in our yearly threads from 1930 to 1938 is probably a mistake, because Marie Isaac doesn't appear in Belgian sources, as "La grande aventure du Tennis belge"
http://books.google.it/books?id=RQKE...tennis&f=false

In 1936 thread, for example, we have Marie Isaac winner in Brussels circa late May, or probably mid-May, Francine Isaac at Roland Garros from May 19, and Marie Isaac RU in Doubles in Wiesbaden circa early June.

I guess that: maybe her name was Marie Francine. In Europe, Marie as first name followed by a second name is much frequent.

However Francine Isaac had a very long career: we have her results from 1923 to 1956!

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Hi Rollo, LKK, and Mark, I have a problem for you, as in the past you have searched about the 2 Naomi Trentham.

Maybe you have already read that two days ago I have found that Johnstone is the maiden name of Mrs (Naomi?) "Mie" Trentham
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....&postcount=586

But now I see that Wimbledon's website puts a Mie Trentham and 2 Naomi Trentham.
http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/score...players/T.html

Mie Johnstone Trentham played Wimbledon in 1933 only, a Naomi Trentham from 1927 to 1933, and the other Naomi Trentham in 1936 and '37.
As we have a photo of Naomi Trentham Gladstone with her twin daughters (I posted it some time ago), maybe we can think that the twin daughters born in 1934 or '35, and that in 1936 Naomi cameback to Wimbledon (in this case Wimbledon's website would have done a mistake, dividing the Trentham 1927-33 from the Trentham 1936-37. And strangely Wimbledon's website, usually careful with married names, doesn't mention her married names Gladstone).

Further problem: in 1936 results thread, that I am preparing, at Wimbledon there is this note: Mrs Mie Trentham=Naomi Trentham, who is married to D Trentham and NOT Miss Naomi Trentham, married in 1933 to Robert Gladstone.
But according Wimbledon's website, Mie Trentham played there in 1933 only. (And in 1933 Mie Johnstone, still unmarried, and Naomi Trentham, were both in draw.) Maybe we can think that also Naomi Trentham Gladstone was nicknamed "Mie".

In the meantime I have found other 2 pics of Naomi Trentham Gladstone

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I see I have a lot of editing in to do!

Quote:
Joy should be a nickname, because Wimbledon website lists her as Jennifer.
http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/score...603/index.html
I added this as a mention bit to her bio, but I see no other reference to this as her name, so I'm not 100% sold on it. Barrett didn't have her name in his 2001 edition. also, the Dictionary of National Biography diesn't mention it.

I created a thread on her with a detailed obituary.

Joy Mowbray-Green's biographical entry is here:
Blast bio at: http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....postcount=1360
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patience Thomson is at:
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....postcount=1958

I was able to add a middle name, date of birth and date of death for Patience.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that P Thomas from 1931 and 1932 is a Mrs P Thomas, thus a different person altogether.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEWART , MARGOT
United Kingdom
Born 11 March 1915
Died November 1999 in Dorset.
Married Frank Digby Mackworth Flowerdew, 10 January 1942 (died 28 July 1989) in Bournemouth, Hampshire, England
Active 1937 to 1949.

Played Wimbledon 1937 to 1939 and in 1949. Singles record was 3-4. Her husband’s death notice was in the London Times.

Her husband anaesthesiologist. and a squash player ofthe highest standard and a formidable tennis player. The couple had 2 sons and a daughter

SMITH, ROSEMARY (Rosemary JM Smith)
United Kingdom
Married John H Mobbs, between October and December 1941 in Nottinghamshire.
[Active 1934-46.]
She was 4-7 at Wimbledon from 1934 to 1939 and in 1946. Rosemary never progessed beyond the 2R.

Yes, I have read his death. I am young on TennisForum, I never talked with him, but I know that he was much esteemed here.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I wil invesgtigate this after the backlog is taken care of:

Quote:
A mystery:

I have found that the British Elsie Hamilton, active in 1930s, married H.R. Phillips, but in Wimbledon's draw 1947 there are Elsie Hamilton and Elsie Phillips, both defeated in 2R. Also official website writes that:
http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/score...7/LS/r2s1.html

A tournament shows us a continuity line between Elsie Hamilton and Mrs H.R. Phillips: in Budleigh Salterton, Hamilton was RU in 1938, Mrs H.R. Phillips was RU in 1948 and divided the prizes in 1951.
So we can suppose that marriage is right (confirmed by Wimbledon website) but we would must suppose another Elsie Phillips too and a Wimbledon website's mistake about her.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Found a good bit on Nonweiler:

NONWEILER MILDRED (Mildred Edith Nonweilwer)

Died December 2003 in Surrey, England
Married William Frank Freeman 26 July 1934 in Cuddinton,St Mary, England

Played Wimbledon from 1931 to 1935. Her singles record there was 2-5.

She lists herself as Scottish in a passenger manifest in 1930. She may have lived or spent a considerable time in the Orient until about 1930.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Added entries for Beryl Rodway, Vera Mattar, and Eveltn Curtis at
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthrea...97314&page=159

It's appears Barrett was in error when he lists Elsie Hamilton in the 1947 draw. the person in question is actually a Mrs E Hamilton who equals Nina Brown Hamilton. Thanks for catching that Jimbo!
