Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Here is another mystery: Miss Mary K. Browne and Mrs Robert H. Williams won together the U.S. doubles championships in 1913, 1914 & 1921. The NYT states at least 7 times that they were sisters, but in our Encyclopedia Mrs Williams' maiden name is Riddell...

I noticed that way back as well LKK. And other than that one mention of it no connection is ever made again. At most they could be half-sisters. Perhaps if we can verify the mother for both....

Yes, the NYT seems to be the only source that mentions this connection. Besides those old articles from 1913/1914, there is another one from 1926. I can see only fragments of it, but it's about a pro contract that Miss Browne signed... and her sister is mentioned in it. Could you quote whole the sentence for me here, as it is cut in the middle in the free preview ?

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I noticed that "Le Figaro" also had an article that mentioned a "Mlle Kleinadel" and a "Mme Kleinadel", so if that wasn't a misprint, it could be that Simone Kleinadel and Yvonne Kleinadel were simply sisters-in-law.

Here are the Brownes, including the father, Albert William, and nine-year-old Mary, living in Ojai in the United States Census taken in 1900:

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

From the 1913 results thread:

Week of April 21, Ojai Valley Open, Ojai, California, US (Hard)
Venue: Ojai Valley Tennis Club

FI: Florence Sutton d. Miss Woodford 6-1 6-0

DF: Florence Sutton/Mrs. H Kearne d. Campbell/Mrs. Macy 6-1 6-1

MX: Florence Sutton/Emery Rogers d. Ruth Browne/Nat Browne 6-1 6-0

Ruth Browne was the younger sitser of Mary K. Browne; Nathaniel "Nat" was their brother.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Thanks for the Browne info Mark. I'll cross-check this against Riddell. Surely the NYT made an error here.

---------------------------------

I double-checked Betty Soames. She marred a Couper for certes, so the entry in the original married names thread was correct and the photo caption is in error. I have several British magazine from the 1930s that confirm the name.

Here's Betty's entry at present:

Naomi Trentham was a Mrs. Aparently she commonly went by the nickname "Mie".

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Given the info Mark provided (note in 1900 Mary's parents had been wed 22 years) and information I found out about Louise Riddell (I found birth and death dates, plus a marriage date for her first wedding.) we can rule out the idea they were sisters.

Oh dear. Back to the drawing board to check my magazine. Could this be two different people?

Thanks Jimbo.

Note I still have to add posts from #329 forward when time permits.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

The marriage of Naomi Trentham to Robert Gladstone was recorded in the third quarter of 1933 in the district of Leominster, which spans the boundaries of the counties of Herefordshire and Hereford and Worcester, England.

I found the same. And I can confirm she was single at least through 1932 Wimbledon.

So tonight I will go over Naomi Trentham.

other than that I am caught up

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I confirm that Naomi Trentham was still single in early May 1933... In Wimbledon'33 draw posted in the Grand Slam Results subforum she is listed as unmarried, but it may be a mistake, because you have her under her maiden name also in 1936 and 1937...

Simone Iribarne... Mme Laffargue or Lafargue... ?
