Good work on Guthrie Jimbo-what a sad story in the end.

LKK has a large number of women linked now. We still have a long way to go-but things are shaping up nicely

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Barbara Winslow was US Girls' Tennis Champion in 1937. I read that she got seriously sick in 1939, but the doctors were not able to diagnose her disease. She died in 1942, and here is her obituary in NYT, but I cannot see its content. Can anyone read it and tell if there are any details in this article ?

http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstra...8ED85F468485F9

I also wonder what happened to another American player - Helen Marlowe, who died in 1947, at the age of just 35. Does anyone know her story ?

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Was Elsie Goldsack's married name "Pitman" (that's how it it spelled in the "Official Married...") or "Pittman" ?

It is Pittman with two t's.

A lot of print sources left off a t.

I added a picture to her bio

Now I have found an article published in 1931 with a photo of this woman, that is described so: Baroness Marga (not Maria) von Ende-Pflügner, German Junior Champion 1931.
But that doesn't prevent that so young she was already married.

The noble family was "von Ende" and this family should be investigated.
I have found a namesake: a Baroness Marga von Ende that married a Krupp, a famous German steel manufacturer.

MELLERSH, Harriet
Born 1851 in Hambledon, Surrey, England
Died 22 February 1908 in Dorchester, Dorset, England
Married Stephen Duke in 1875 in Saint George's Church, Hanover Square, London, England

Harriet Mellersh was orphaned at a young age and more than likely adopted by her uncle and aunt, Fred and Fanny Mellersh, the parents of Gerturde Mellersh. Mr Mellersh was a banker by profession.

Harriet's husband might have died early as she was playing tennis under her maiden name in the late 1880s. She was active as a lawn tennis player in the late 1880s-early 1890s.

All of today's players added on page 150

http://www.tennisforum.com/showthrea...97314&page=150

Thanks for the entries Mark.
Thanks for more info on Toni Kusenberg Jimbo.
I added what I know about Barbara Winslow.

Note I went with Van Ende for Pfluger, so if someone thinks this is incorrect let me know.
Also, if someone knows Martha Guthrie's parents I can probably connect her to a Martha Guthrie born in 1893.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

MORGAN, Anne (United States) [1921- ] [Active 1930s.]

A left-handed tennis player from Berkeley, California, the Washington State champion in 1936; often described as another product of W.C. "Pop" Fuller (the coach who helped both great Helens: Wills & Jacobs at the beginning of their careers); although she won many junior events and a few minor senior tournaments, mostly in her native state, never reached the level of her magnificent predecessors.

"She is the best tennis player at fourteen who ever delighted the soul of a coach. The first time I saw Anne, I picked her for a coming champion. She is playing better tennis at 14 than either of the two famous Helens played at that age. She has a fine all-round game, with an excellent back-hand stroke, which is very rare in a left-handed girl. She has fine natural coordination, good eyesight, is strong, muscular, speedy and patient." (W.C. Fuller, a tennis coach with 25 years of experience, in Lodi News-Sentinel - July 12, 1935, page 6)
