Ok I understand "Red Indian" may have been something you were taught but it is as offensive as calling black people "Colored." Indigenous American or Native American is the most politically correct terminology.

To answer the question. The United States is a diverse country. We have every ethnic group in the world represented within our borders so even though Native Americans WERE here 1st they aren't the people that are associated with being Americans. In fact their tribunal governments are seen as seperate ENTIRELY from the United States government all together. They won't pledge allegiance to the American flag and likely do not call themselves American if you were to ask them.

I have a friend who is Native American and she won't even stand when the National Anthem is sung at sporting events or in public. Mostly because of how the Europeans drove them from their land here in North America, and Columbus "Discovering" AKA STEALING the land from the Indian tribes that had been here for centuries.

Re: USA is the country of?

The correct answer is that the USA is an extremely diverse country that nonetheless does have a unique identity. When America is living up to its ideals, this identity is open to everyone of all backgrounds.

Eskimo is still a widely accepted and used term in many countries, even if it isn't in yours and countries which have Inuit populations within the borders.

Red Indian - I didn't know it was overtly offensive in North America but it is very archaic sounding I agree and I think most people I know would probably say Native American, or American-Indian - both of which are a bit misleading because they might not necessarily refer only to the USA or USA/Canada.

i was referring specifically to "eskimos" who are native americans, as per the context of this thread.

USA has unique identity. A Christian Nation. Just look at the $1 bill; In God we Trust.

What does President swear in his inauguration? (Well the tradition was started by Ike, though )

And gun loving..

Yep, the USA is not dominated by one ethnic group or one ethnic identity. Despite its flaws, this diversity is what makes it so great and personally my favorite country in the world.

That is how the country was founded on, like it or not.

Re: USA is the country of?

thus, USA is a country of, which defines its unique identity, 3 things;

Bible(North), Slavery a.k.a. profit(South), and Gun(maybe associated with Frontier Spirit and the elimination of Native Americans).

All 3 are defined by aggressiveness, incidentally (Christian's aggressive proselytizing)

Referring to Native Americans as redskins, reds, red Indians, etc. is pretty unanimously considered offensive and outdated in the US.

"Winthrop's sermon gave rise to the widespread belief in American folklore that the United States of America is God's country because metaphorically it is a Shining City upon a Hill, an early example of American exceptionalism."
