Re: Bio Test for LKK

HOXIE, JEAN (nee Jean Raymond)
Born 17 March 1898
Died 06 May 1970
Married Jerry Hoxie

Though she entered Forest Hills at least once, Jean was most noted for being a famous tennis coach. In the 1940s, Jean Hoxie and her husband Jerry established the first tennis camp in the United States.

Jean was the first woman to coach a Michigan high school boys tennis team, was judged by consensus to be "the most successful tennis coach of teenage players in Michigan history". More than 200 national and international champions achieved their skills under her tutelage. From 1949 to 1965, her Hamtramck teams won 16 state titles in 17 years. She formed and ran successful tennis clinics in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Canada and the United States. The "Hoxie" method was world famous, allowing Jean to write many instructional articles and books.

She coached many U.S. National tennis champions. Peaches Bartkowicz, won the girls' Wimbledon singles title in 1964,and was ranked in the world top 10, was her most prominent student. Peaches would later remark on how tough Hoxie was.

On 6 May 1970, she died in a “freak automobile accident” on the Northwood campus

Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

TAYLOR, ETTA
United States
Born 1909
Died 16 September 2003
Married Frank Coyne in 1929

From her obituary:

ETTA TAYLOR COYNE TENNIS CHAMPION Etta Taylor Coyne, 94, of Atlanta, died September 16, 2003. Mrs. Coyne was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1909 to Lucille and Bruce B. Taylor. She attended Girl's High in Atlanta and then St. Mary's College in Raleigh, NC, where she played tennis, basketball, and was a member of the track team. She met her husband of 49 years, Frank, on the tennis courts in Atlanta and in 1929, they started a "match made in heaven". Etta achieved an outstanding record in tennis during a career lasting 65 years. She won 23 city, state, and regional tennis titles. She and her husband Frank were instrumental in forming the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association in 1934 where she served as the vice president and he as the treasurer on the first board. She actively participated in her beloved Bitsy Grant Tennis Center ALTA team until she was 85 years old. She was a member of Cathedral of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, and her activities included The Daughters of the King, St. Claudia's Chapter, church librarian, and teaching the 5th grade Sunday school class for over 50 years. She enjoyed playing bridge and hand painting china with her neighborhood group for over 40 years. Her work as a seamstress was sought after by many who saw her fashions. She created her wardrobe to compete in the Hearst National Tennis Championships in California in 1932. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing and won the 1928 Demolay Dance contest in Atlanta and continued to eagerly enter the dance floor whenever the music played. Her winning personality and never-ending optimism were an inspiration to all who met her. She has now left us to join her husband Frank to continue the "match made in heaven".She was pre-deceased by her husband, Frank, and her daughter, Anita Coyne Adams. Survivors include her daughter Camilla and her husband Don Tomberlin; her son Frank Jr. and his wife Deborah; her grandchildren: David, Donald, Travis, Melanie, Becky and Libby; and one great-grandchild, Sam.
