Re: Players you are not fan of but enjoy watching them?
For me Marion Bartoli fits the bill. I can’t seem to cheer for her as I’m usually cheering for her opponent. Still I admire her unorthodox style which drives the TV commentators nuts. Invariably they disparage her hyperactivity between points as obvious energy depleting and of course they are always quick to mention that no tennis instructor would recommend mirroring her serve motion. And yet she is still a top player on tour defying all the perceived technical faults ascribed to her. I especially admire her pluck and never say die attitude on court.
A typical example was her loss to Ekaterina Makarova in the recently completed AO. She was down 1-4 in the first set tie breaker but won the next six of seven points to take the set. She was down 0-5 in the third set but broke Ekaterina twice to bring the set back on serve; only to lose her equalizing service game partly as a result of serving two DFs. I adjudge that match as one of the most compelling in the entire tournament. When Marion retires from the tour she will be definitely missed notwithstanding that she will unlikely have a slam title in her career résumé.
