2014 PYW Australian Championships (Winner: Casey Dellacqua)

2014 Australian PYW Championships!

Welcome one and all to the 2014 Australian Pick-Your-Winner Championships, this year held in the idyllic coastal hamlet of Streaky Bay, South Australia. 2014 sees a distinctly grim selection of Australia's elite female tennis players descending upon the sleepy town. The meagre field includes a number of players who have been forced out of semi-retirement in order to fill out the draw. The players and their entourages have booked out every donga and fishing shack available in the town in anticipation for this year's championships, sponsored by Streaky Bay Fishing and Tackle. The Streaky Bay Tennis Club is thrilled to be hosting the event. Club president Tanya McTavish was quoted as saying "When I first heard the championships were coming to Streaky Bay I was nervous because their aren't many lesbians in our town and our club has never staged an event of this size before. However, after our members contributed to a working bee and we attended some anti-discrimination training, we are now thrilled and ready for the girls to show us some great tennis. We wish them all the best in their efforts to hold aloft the prestigious Michelle Jaggard-Lai trophy by the end of the tournament."

Qualifying starts Friday December 12

Re: 2014 PYW Australian Championships - qualies start Friday Dec 12!

Surely we could've given Destanee a WC into qualies??

Who do I complain to? Will Tania McTavish take my complaint seriously????

Btw, hooray for the Michelle Jaggard-Lai trophy Best tournament of the year, hands down.

If Destanee wasn't given a WC into Bendigo quallies, what makes you think she can score one into this prestigious, highly sought-after event?

Can't wait for this to start!

Re: 2014 PYW Australian Championships - qualies start Friday Dec 12!

Hi guys. I've received some feedback from Streaky Bay Tennis club president Tanya McTavish on some of the issues that have been raised.

Re: Destanee Aiava, Tanya reported:

"Oh dear, is that a real person? I saw that wildcard application in the club's hotmail account but I though it was a joke. Then, after we did the anti-discrimination training and we learned what a transexual is, I assumed it was one of those transexuals who likes to invent a cute name for themselves. Well, it doesn't matter anyway because her ranking's not high enough."

Re: Daria and Ajla:

"Oh yes we heard some foreign players had been processed in Nauru who could play tennis quite well. We offered both of them a spot but when I telephoned them to follow it up, they didn't seem to know where Streaky Bay was at all. They asked who was playing and when I started to read the list, I only got as far as Tyra Calderwood before they laughed and hung up. It's probably a good thing though because I later received a hotmail from Arina Rodionova that was riddled with swear words. She wrote that she wasn't allowed to enter the Biloela and Wee Waa events in 2012 and 2013 and asked "So WTF should those b**ches be allowed to play at Streaky Bay then?". I then had to explain to the tennis committee what WTF stood for and they were shocked. Arina has been warned to watch her language while in Streaky Bay."

Hi Territory, I hope you can pass on this message and get a response from Tanya McTavish.

Seems I know a person, who wishes to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, who's from a neighbouring district and tennis club. Has no ill feeling at all towards Streaky Bay, nothing at all, but when driving through the town as fast as possible on the way to the city, well they heard something interesting taking a pitstop at the local watering hole (for medicinal reasons apparently).

First off was the surprise of last year's championships, with the only logical conclusion being the spiking of the Liptons at breakfast to get those sort of results. No other way. Sounds rather dodgy doesn't it? Considering the RSL hall hasn't been the same place since Storm's post-champs celebrations it makes you ponder (not me, or me mate, the locals!).

Which led to talk about the people running it. Event committee members with arthritis so bad they couldn't hold the registration papers still, let alone fill out the forms. Old Chester who constantly sits with his nose to the screen of his television ranting about getting that outrageous young whipper-snapper Graham Kennedy off the tv set. There were more stories but the orator may have be towards the end of Happy Hour at that time, and recollections were definitely now family-oriented.

But anyway, it makes you wonder, certainly about the legitimacy and capability of the running of the tournament and also about how are these people still in power because of cronyism that is so entrenched it would make even TA administrators blush? Surely some new blood into the competition would improve it?

Also strong rumours that Scott Morrison has privately backed the club and even visited the facilities a few months back donating some resources? Seems a bit strange but with the Dasha and Alja snubs, it all adds up. 2+2=5 as they say.

I'm sure Tanya would be very interested to respond to these concerns, brought up by a rival tennis club member, with legitimate reasons and the sincere wish for the smooth running of this fine tournament.

Just adds fuel to the flames and where's there's smoke! Also fires in December? Totally flouting with the total fire ban laws. If they have the power to flout them, what other "rules" are being flouted with?
