Re: What does CGS mean?
It's an amazing feat, especially on 3 different surfaces. Maybe it's not as big of an accomplishment as it was 10 years ago because of surface homogenization, but winning all four is still pretty incredible.

Re: What does CGS mean?
at the Willytards in this thread retroactively deciding the Career Grand Slam means nothing just because Maria got it. 5 years ago, when Serena and Justine were almost tied on slams, they were screeching in every thread on the subject that Serena having the full set put her streets ahead of Justine

it's quite ridiculous to put together Wills , Lenglen and Seles . It wasn't possible for the first to win All4 , moreover term "Grand Slams" as well as 4 Grand Slam tournaments were officially recognized by ITF in 1925 , when Suzanne was almost retired and Wills didn't care about such a remote and just established as a Majore as AO ........
as for Career Grand Slam - it's huge achievement by itself.. We have 4 Grand Slam tournaments with about a century years history. Each player's goal is to win Wimbledon, French Open, Us Open and Australian Open. Any player , who is multiple GS champion I'm sure was struggling to the end of career to win eventually missing Major Title. Career GS in contemporary tennis - confirmation that player is competent on all different tennis surfaces, being versatile, having ability to adapt game to different conditions is always highly valued
The fact that only 10 players managed to achieve CGS just shows that winning CGS is a tough goal , just in comparison , winning 5+ Slams managed 30 women

The only thing missing from Sampras' resume is a victory on the French Open clay. He realizes that without it, he might not be regarded as No. 1 all-time, no matter how many Slams titles he wins.

Re: What does CGS mean?
It's certainly a great achievement but it doesn't automatically make you one of the very greatest. For example I still think Seles is far greater than Maria and even Justine/Venus are greater than Maria. But then again if the difference between number of slams between two players isn't that big CGS puts you higher obviously. I'm sure nyone would take 4 Maria's titles instead e.g. 2xAO and 3xFO

Roger Federer was in 5 French Open Finals , he is great clay court player .... The only reason why he won RG only once is that he was unlucky to face clay GOAT Rafa Nadal , the best tennis player on clay and one of the top 5 best players ever in tennis

By the way Djoker told that his goal is to win RG this year (and complete CGS) ..... Marta might be teasing him

I guess you didn't read the quote referenced in my post.

Not sure which is more of a fluke: Serena's RG or Maria's RG.

Can we at least let Sharapova defend her title before we label it a fluke?

Fine, I'll go with Serena for the moment; she's had 10 years and probably the weakest clay court field in history to prove herself.
