What does CGS mean?

I know CGS means Career Grand Slam but I wanted to know what people think it means in terms of tennis greatness. I ask because I think it is a huge and rare feat but I would say the Calendar Grand Slam, or holding all 4 slams at once, is more of an indication of greatness. There however, are plenty of great players who are Hall of Famers that never won the CGS, or even came close. Just wanted to have some other thoughts and opinions on it.

I got this quote online from wikipedia page about the Career Grand Slam.

"Seven men and ten women have won Career Grand Slams in singles play; among them two men and four women have at least two CGS in singles.

Since the beginning of the open era, four men and six women have done it (Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal; Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova).

Several singles players have won multiple major championships without achieving the Career Grand Slam.

Björn Borg never won the US Open or the Australian Open, and John McEnroe never won the Australian Open or the French Open.

Ken Rosewall, Guillermo Vilas, Ivan Lendl, Monica Seles, Mats Wilander, and Justine Henin failed to win Wimbledon.

Pete Sampras, John Newcombe, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Martina Hingis, and Lindsay Davenport failed to win the French Open.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley never won the US Open. Helen Wills Moody and Althea Gibson never won the Australian Open.

Among active singles players who won multiple championships, Venus Williams has not won either the Australian Open or the French Open; Novak Djokovic has not won the French Open"

All of that is to say there are plenty of LEGENDS that never won the Career Grand Slam, but it is never a knock on their record when their careers are discussed so what does it say about the few that have achieved this feat and those that have not?

Player AO FO W USO

Re: What does CGS mean?

I'm on the fence about this, while i think winning all four slams is amazing due to them being on a different surface i still think having multiple slams is an amazing feat.

Re: What does CGS mean?

It is one feat among several on the resume of the greatest players. It also worth noting that several of the greatest ever don't have the Career Slam: Helen Wills, Suzanne Lenglen and Monica Seles.

I feel the same. I think the Career Grand slam is definitely a big deal but I don't think it is required to be considered a great player. If you win all 4 then you're in rare company but Sampras for example, never won the French Open but Nadal has already achieved the Career Golden Slam yet I still know many people would argue to the death that Sampras is/was greater.

I added that part in the OP too. I think that is why I really posted this thread. There are so many All TIme greats that never even came close to this achievement but I don't think it takes anything away from there greatness because they didn't win. On the flip side I don't think the CGS is the be all end all of a debate on who is greater either.

Re: What does CGS mean?

btw, I actually will never quite understand the need to rank the best players of all-time and to compare their achievements but hey ...
I don't see the point in arguing, for instance, which of Venus who has won 7 Slams at 2 different Slams , or Sharapova who has 4 at 4 different Slams , is the most impressive . Both feats are amazing

Re: What does CGS mean?

I wish the sport could somehow get some agreement on which achievements they place a higher value on and then maybe we could use some sort of objective criteria to calculate for greatness. I know that at the end of the day a lot of how we rank players is by subjective criteria- to one person they put more value on winning different slams and to another they put more value on simply how many you won. There's no right or wrong but it would be cool if there were some sort of general consensus. As it is I think everyone agrees its an awesome remarkable feat, we just don't know how many 'stars' you get next to your name for doing it (so to speak).

It's a great accomplishment no doubt, but slightly overrated.

I agree. I think when it comes to the greatest players we can come to some consensus based on records at slams especially when their total slam count is close. What we can't always say is what was greater, because like you said its mostly subjective.

Re: What does CGS mean?

Well, it's worth noting that some, like Wills Moody, never played the Aussie Open. (One wonders what her slam total might have been if she had). Of course, you can also count against some of the old-timers that at one point the Aussie, US Open and Wimby were ALL on grass (or in a couple of rare instances I believe the US Open was also on clay).

Realistically, I think the CGS is really meaningful only in the post-rescheduled AO era. Too many great players simply skipped the French and the AO for years if it didn't fit their schedule or playing style. It's really only been since then that players routinely play all four slams.

Of course, a calendar year GS, a Golden Slam or a Martina/Serena Slam is always a major deal.

Re: What does CGS mean?

It's a nice touch but not much more. Possible decider between 2 players who both won the same amount of slams if there's not much else between them. 4 Slam + YEC or Olympic > CGS.

Nuff said IMO. And only Laver and Graf have achieved a Grand Slam.
