Madrid scheduling

The scheduling in Madrid is beyond pathetic. Julia Görges played her R1 match on Saturday and now isn't scheduled for Tuesday, so she will have to play her R2 match against Lepchenko on Wednesday. That's 4 days between two matches. How are you supposed to maintain any playing rhythm with a schedule like that?

Meanwhile Sara Errani, who will face Lepchenko or Görges on Thursday played already today, so she will have 3 days between her R2 and R3 matches while her opponent will have a one day break.

The WTA has to either stand their ground and force these tournaments to adapt a reasonable schedule for WTA matches, or just stop the whole "joint tournament" charade and do things on their own if they're not willing to fight for fair treatment.

Meh....in fairness they get paid enough to deal with this minor detail.

Hantuchova also played first round on Saturday and will have to wait until Wednesday to play Kvitova

Re: Madrid scheduling

This really is nothing to do with it being a joint event though (look at the amount of space on the outside courts today for example), it's just plain bad scheduling from the organisers. They scheduled matches without planning ahead, there is no real need for them to start on Saturday full stop.

Re: Madrid scheduling

I quite like scheduling with changed mind about showing WTA it's make more sense since more WTA matches have chance to be televised and they don't have to chose between Marion vs Tita, Kvitty vs Dani, Ana vs Chanti, Nadia vs Kuzzy fighting for one or two tv spots instead they can show all of them

Look on the bright side, usually Görges doesn´t make it to Wednesday.

Re: Madrid scheduling

Aside from the fact that Görges made the SF here in 2011 so the whole joke falls flat, can't this be discussed without childish name calling and without focusing on a single player but rather that this should not be allowed to happen to any player in the draw? Particularly when there has been absolutely no reason for a scheduling mess as the weather has been fine.

Re: Madrid scheduling

The scheduling is questionable. They shouldn't have to wait for four days for a second round match even if they are paid a lot.

I thought this thread was going to be about most matches being in the morning. Obviously that is my own problem. For me, personally, Spain is just in the wrong time zone for morning matches. I've missed everything except the evening matches. I wish the women were scheduled later in the day, but I suffer through bad highlights instead.

I would be kind of peeved if I were Goerges, Errani, and others who have to wait so long. Is it because of doubles?

Doubt it, Goerges went out of the doubles yesterday, Errani didn't even enter the doubles.

They should schedule it R1 Sunday/Monday, R2 Tuesday/Wednesday, R3 Thursday, QF Friday, SF Saturday, F Sunday. You put one half on Sunday, the other half Monday (outside of outstanding circumstances, eg. Pavyluchenkova obviously has to play Monday). It shouldn't really be that hard for organisers to do that, there is enough court space for them to do that. The scheduling in Madrid doesn't make sense, if you take Kvitova as the marquee player, why is she playing Sunday and then Wednesday, why didn't she play today. Kerber plays yesterday, then plays R2 again today. That just makes no sense, and makes it look like they are just making the schedule up as they go along, rather than scheduling with a structure in mind.

It is really bad, it seems like they did not have a saturday start, for the first round to span 4 days is pathetic.

Re: Madrid scheduling

The scheduling is really questionable. Does having a few days off really have an adverse effect on players? Julia plays doubles too. Would be worse to play twice in one day.

I've heard Federer and Djokovic fans blame a walkover at grand slams (thus giving them 4 days between matches) for ruining their rhythm before, there probably is something in it.

R1 is a mess and irrelevant in every big tournament, rest is ok. They have 7 R2 matches on Tuesday\Wednesday each, i see no problem with two matches falling out from 8\8 formula, if we look at this from TV prospective they will show 14 out of 16 R2 matches instead of maximum 12 with 8\8 formula, also squeezing more action mixed with atp and spreading matches to outer courts is not great from money making prospective either, having more days is beneficial
