Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol4

Also JT's new album reminds me of Bey's '4' in the sense that the only reason I like it is because it's different from everything else out at the moment (in the charts at least). Although '4' actually had songs that were listenable and of quality; not just 8 minutes of mellow (boring) elevator music.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol4

You know about these never-ending discussions about who the most accomplished players in recent history are and all that. So I tried to think of some sort of points system that would be fair and at least attemps to be objective. I realize though that this can never really be achieved and no matter how many points I give for what achievement, there will always be those who disagree.

The list only includes recent players (from Hingis onwards). Players who had most, or a lot of their biggest success before the Hingis era haven't been included because 'recent' has got to stop somewhere. I did this only out of curiosity to see what I would end up with and I hadn't intended to post this at TF. I feel no need to justify myself to the people if someone they hate is too high and someone they love is too low on the list. But I figured, since SS is not GM, why not? It's not as though anyone will care anyway. There were some surprises (at least for me), most notably among them the very strong showing of Lindsay Davenport. Even though one can't regard this list as definitive, it's pretty clear to me that she's one of the most underrated players out there.

Anyway, this is the points system I used:

Grand Slams: 16 points for W, 10 for RU, 6 for SF, 3 for QF, 1 for R4
Grand Slam bonus points: 20 points for calender year grand slam, 16 for four in a row, 12 for a career slam, 8 for three in a row, 4 for three different ones in a career. Needless to say these bonus points are very rare.

YEC: 10 points for W, 6 for RU, 3 for SF
Olympics: 10 points for G, 6 for S, 3 for B

Premier Mandatory/Premier5/Tier 1: 4 points for W, 2 for RU

Other tournaments: 1 point for W

Year end rankings: 10 points for #1, 9 for #2, and so on until 1 point for #10.

I don't rule out that I made some mistakes here or there (I would be surprised if I didn't) because after a few hours of doing this I got a bit dizzy and quite bored actually. If there are any mistakes however I think (and hope) they are minor ones and don't have a great impact on the ranking below. Anyway - this is the top thirty.....

-1 SERENA WILLIAMS...562 points
-2 LINDSAY DAVENPORT...430
-3 VENUS WILLIAMS...422
-4 MARTINA HINGIS...415
-5 JUSTINE HENIN...362
-6 MARIA SHARAPOVA...332
-7 KIM CLIJSTERS...309
-8 JENNIFER CAPRIATI...233
-9 AMELIE MAURESMO...228
10 MARY PIERCE...205

11 Elena Dementieva...172
12 Svetlana Kuznetsova...145
13 Victoria Azarenka...144
14 Jelena Jankovic...123
15 Caroline Wozniacki...117
16 Dinara Safina...108
17 Vera Zvonareva...107
18 Ana Ivanovic...96
19 Na Li...80
20 Petra Kvitova...79
21 Nadia Petrova...78
22 Agnieszka Radwanska...76
23 Samantha Stosur...68
24 Patty Schnyder...68
25 Anastasia Myskina...67
26 Francesca Schiavone...61
27 Daniela Hantuchova...43
28 Marion Bartoli...41
29 Jelena Dokic...40
30 Chanda Rubin...35

Yeah Lindsay had a stellar career, people forget how often she went deep in Slams. She just always seemed to come up a little short.

She'd choke quite a lot. I remember the AO 2005 final with Serena. Lindsay was pretty much on her way to beating Serena but there was something (I can't remember what) that completely threw Lindsay off and she didn't win a single game after it.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol4

And to be honest that's a pretty accurate list. Like, if I had to list the top 10 players since 1997 those would be the players I'd choose and (roughly) in that order.

She wasn't much of a fighter either. If things went against her she often had this mentality of, "oh well, this just ain't gonna be my day." Even so, doing this nonsense and looking at all her achievements reminded me of her greatness because she really had an incrdible career. Perhaps she lacked a bit of the charisma and 'star quality' that many of the other greats had and that perhaps explains why she's a bit underrated.

Yeah, all in all it's pretty solid I think. Numbers don't lie. That was the idea - take my own prejudices and preferences out of it and see what the result would be.

Re: Off Topic....Anything Goes vol4

Awesome work, Chrissie-fan! Lindsay at #2 is somewhat surprising, but I feel like people underrate her when compared to other greats because she "only" won 3 slams. She's pretty stellar everywhere else.

Yeah. At the AO 2005 final she really had that attitude. It was as if she just accepted she was gonna lose before the 3rd set had even begun. Shame really because she was playing much, much better than Serena in that match.

I don't know why I fall victim to it. I mean. WTH do I actually care what a group of internet trolls think? And why should I tell them things about my life? Wonderfan is the worst - I'm not sure who that poster is but yeah w/e. I feel kinda sorry for them that they have to be negative all the time and try and bully people online. They must have really shitty lives

Don't let them get on your nerves CV, it's not worth it. Remember, a smart person won't insult you and a dumb person can't insult you.

IIRC, she had a ton of opportunities to break Serena at like 2-2 in the second set but didn't. Then she was serving at 3-4, *40-0 and she missed an absolute sitter of backhand. Then she double faulted, and just completely unraveled from then on and didn't win another game.

Davenport wasn't a cutthroat competitor like Serena, Sharapova, or Seles but she did have moments where she competed unbelievably well. She showed so much grit in the 05 Wimbledon final, probably more than in the slam finals she did win. And outside of the slams she won like 52 titles, won a Gold Medal, finished four years at #1, and was stellar in doubles. She'll always be criminally underrated in my book.
