Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

all the talk in the Steffi thread regarding how her game would match up power wise compared with today got me thinking......would a sort of accurate way of tracking how much recquet technology assists power be found in the serve of kimiko date krumm??

ie - does Kimiko have a more powerful serve these days than she did in her first career? does anyone have a comparison of her fastest serve in her modern career as she did in her 90's career? I realise that maybe her body today isn't as dynamic as it once was, however she still seems in pretty good shape.

I believe steffi's fastest serve was around 110MPH? I wonder if looking at kimiko's would give us an idea of how much faster would could expect graf's to be had she been playing in the modern era.

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

It's a very good question I'll see what I can find but I don't think Kimiko got her serve into the 100's much if at all in her first career as her serve was always her weak point.

Some old Date matches Back in 92 and 94

Anyway this is not even a question, especially if you have played tennis for the past 20 years, you would know how much racket tecnology has improved IMO. And how much faster you can hit the ball, with less effort.

What makes a serve great isn't speed but disguise and placement.

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

I don't have the exact data right now so correct me if I'm wrong but I heard some KDK's old fan saying
her serve got faster like 10-20km. recently KDK hit 170km serve and it surprised me that it never happened in 90s.
170km serve in early 90s should be quite a big serve, I don't think even Graf wasn't hitting often....

KDK herself admits her serve is better than 90s.
the biggest change is of course the improvement in equipment like strings and the training skills at gym.
80-early 90s equipment at gym must be like a toy compared to today....

Date-Krumm is 5 ft 4 so let's face it, she's never gonna have a big serve.

Oh this is nice.
So basically top speed is +10km even adding "some" age.
Comparing one tournament from each era is not a enough sample but KDK played both tourney pretty well so not a bad choice.

I'm pretty sure KDK's second career fastest serve is around 165-170km...

About the average speed, she's mixing slow serves often nowadays so hard to compare maybe....
as Jarkafish says, KDK's not a big server anyway so considering Graf's physical potential, she may add up 10-20km for serve speed in mordan days.

Her serve was definitely a weapon though. At least until she started to choke away matches with DF's.

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

since Graf's time radar technologies were also improved, not only rackets.... Sampras's first serve was in the range 115-128mph , after new radars were installed around the year 2000 it became 122-135mph. Agassi went from 105mph-115mph on first serves to the 112-122mph. Just radars gave 7 mph advantage..... Now give Sampras new rackets and his first serve speed will be in the Raonic's range

By the way Goran Ivanisevic beat his fastest serve speed record at an exho being for a long time retired , it tells much that speed registered before 2000 and speed in contemporary time can't be compared

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

I've seen Kimiko's both careers... Her service speed might got faster a bit now... but more like, I believe she has better placement and consistency in her service games. Yes, it is still her weaker side...but especially her second services now got much better. She has better mental now, and she can play flexible games now, I think.
Oh yea, racket technology... def... has changed for sure!

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

Martina Navratilova played doubles and mixed doubles till 40, and hers serve speed at 40 is way more faster than when she is 25yo on hers prime

Arguable best server of 90'is Dutch Brenda Schultz-McCarthy which retire in 1999 but when she is already 35+ old she comeback on couple months of 2006 season - enough to serve (tied) fastest WTA serve ever (209kmh/130mph) in Cincinnati qualifications. On some lists of WTA fastest serves this serve is not counted (bc its qualies) but hers name is still on TOP5 (Indian Wells 2006 with 203kmh/126mph).

Re: Serve Speed Comparison: Date Krumm 90's vs today?

KDK started a new training method called functional training(?) since last fall and it seems working.
I do not know but do we had a word for core training in 20 years ago??

so the method or theory for trainings are also improving...
It's not like players nowaday are born to be strong or something.
