It's called a 'happy slam' so I think it has an image of a more relaxed,fun event in comparison with the others which are more about tradition.

AO is by far my favorite Slam. Fan attendance is o/s, very good support for the ladies and weather is decent for the most part with top-notch facilities. In addition, the majority of the players (men and women) absolutely love it. The only other Slam that comes close is Wimbledon. Unfortunately, the quality of play for the ladies this year wasn't very good, a lot of non-competitive matches. But, it doesn't detract from the atmosphere, attendance and quality of the facilities in Melbourne.

Roland Garros is the most broadcasted tennis tournament in the world. Saying it's unknown next to Wimbledon is just wrong.

USO is the worst slam from my point of view, I hate third set tie-break in a slam and also the bad scheduling

For me I have always loved the USO and AO.  USO is actually about 3 miles from my house so, of course it is my favorite. I think the Last Set Tiebreak is brilliant. I don't like watching matches that go 12-10, 21-19, or whatever else. 7-6 is good enough. When I went to the USO last year I was amazed at how crowded it was. There really is a HUGE amount of people there, more than I see on TV at the other slams. It was to a point of overcrowding. Its a wonder how the tournament actually runs!
AO I just love the whole tournament, the grounds, its the first of the year, things like that. Very relaxed overall.
I actually ranked Wimbledon last on my list of what I like when I was younger. Eventhough a lot of my players that I have liked have done well there, I always found it so boring.
But honestly now as I am getting older, I rank all pretty equally.

The US Open is one of the biggest revenue generators for the WTA ever year. It earns more money than the Australian Open. Therefore its more important to the tour.
The second statement is based on how you view the topic. If you view the topic based on what is most important to the WTA with regard to promotion, revenue, etc. than to rank the AO as one of the top majors is factually wrong.
However, if you view the topic as a personal question as to which major do I most enjoy? Or which major do I as a fan like the best? Then the AO can certainly be ranked high on the list.
I hope that explains it.

So Wimbledon and FO don't earn money for the WTA - only the USO and AO ?
