WWW: French Open Predictions

On to the French Open now. What's your take on who will win and predictions for the top 10?

Serena - I have a feeling it will be a repeat of last year. She'll be super focused on irrelevant clay court tournaments to be well prepared for the FO and then get's another shocker. It always happen to her when someone unexpected steps up to challenge her and it won't be Azarenka or Sharapova. Her serve is not as effective on this surface and hence will be her downfall here.

Vika - It's hard to predict where she'll be at the FO this year. I think I'll have to wait and see her performance on clay and see if she's made any improvements.

Sharapova - She'll definitely go deep in the draw again. This is her best surface now because of her movement. Of the top 4 players, she's the least likely to be upset by some scrub on this surface. Clay gives her more time to set up her shots and her defensive skill is less exposed. Unfortunately, I don't think she'll be so lucky this time around as there won't be another Errani in the final...or will there?

Radwanska - I'm surprised she's not better on this surface because it should suit her gamestyle, but then again Hingis never won the FO either. I think she'll lose to a random player.

Na Li - I have a feeling this is Na's for the taking. She's improved dramatically this year and like Henin's domination of the FO, Carlos Rodriguez is an expert on clay. I pick her to rack up her second slam here.

Sveta - I think she has a real chance especially since this is her best surface. She's playing much better this year as proven at the AO. She might screw her head together for another possible FO.

Petra Kvitova - God only knows, but never count her out.

Final: Na Li def. Maria Sharapova in straight sets
Alternative: Maria Sharapova def Laura Robson in straight sets
Dark horse: Svetlana Kuznetsova

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

Maria is not defending the title that is for sure. Only because she she wins slams every second year and in consecutive fashion, so Wimby 2014 is hers.
Sveta is interesting, if she keeps improving she is probably the best Clay courter presently.
Li, I am not convinced is that great on clay, her wins rank up there with Serena/Maria/Myskina/Ana
Serena-who knows early losses seem to inspire her. She is bound to win the FO again, I reckon this year is hers.
Stosur should be on that list, she is very god on clay, her brain just needs to be there.

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

Give us time
We need to see how they're doing in clay season first beside Maria beating up on every contender for the title before the FO last year is a certitude that noone would have beaten her in the final, not even Stosur(who is IMO her biggest threat on the surface) so no she wasn't lucky, just the better player during the fortnight.

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

Isn't it a bit early? After last year's nightmare, Serena's clearly the favorite. She has the game and now she has the motivation.

Maria, Na, Svetlana, Vika are the other contenders.

The French Open are miles away. Seriously, people should THINK before they open threads like this. Can't believe some of the threads that have opened up here recently...

I think Errani will reach the finals again. Who she will face and what outcome I would never guess.

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

Serena favorite to win this year. Don't play doubles. I expect Vika to do better here this year compared to last year but not enough to win it. Maria could win it too but it won't be easy to repeat last year.

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

Maria wont defend her title, plus she's a mental headcase in finals.
Serena will suffer another shocking loss (in R4/QF).
Li Na might be a contender. Stosur and Kvitova could go far or could lose early.

I'm 99% sure Azarenka will win the FO and then probably USO as well.

Re: WWW: French Open Predictions

It´s not like a bit early for this? Anyway, as there are no real clay specialist anymore, this is the most random GS of all. Anything can happen, so most of the answers I am seeing could be OK (apart from the usual self indulging, over the top my Pova Pova Pova posts ) Serena, if she is healthy, then Vika, and yes, Sharapova could win again if the first two go out early, the same applies to Aga or Li.
