If all the posters were opening threads because a slam didn't go their way, it would be a mess. Next time try the result thread.

It was the worst Slam since the last one and it will be the worst one until the next one......that's usually how it goes around here.

Re: Now I usually get sick of all the naysayers..

We kind of got the worst of both worlds in that 1) We didn't see many early-round upsets, and 2) We didn't see a marquee matchup between top-5 players. So not many pre-match storylines existed. But a lot of dramatic stuff happened during matches, and that helped make up for the tournament's shortcomings. I thought the final was a quality match between two deserving champions, which you rarely see in a WTA Slam final. Overall, AO 2012 was better, but we'll probably have a worse Slam this year.

Re: Now I usually get sick of all the naysayers..

Certainly could have done without all the injuries and drama surrounding them.
Also would have been nice to have had an injury-free Final as well.
But alas, such is the sport of tennis.
One just never knows what tragedy will strike on the 11th hour.

Re: Now I usually get sick of all the naysayers..

Women's tennis has shit quality slams tennis wise from time to time, that is something that is bound to happen (and happens with the men too) but the sad thing about this Oz open is I feel women's tennis is just losing the general public's respect.

No sport wants it's #1 to be hated and unpopular and neither do they want them to have a cloud of unsportsman-like behaviour above their head.

Women's tennis needs to do some serious PR work after this, a slam final finished in muted applause not great celebration is never good for the sport.

Its really been awful both in quality terms and for the image of the game.

This is not the worst Slam, but I feel your sentiment. The worst Slam would have been the RG10 with Schiavone won the Slam, nothing against her though.

For me this is one of the worst Slams, b/c Serena was playing at the best level of tennis so far this year, then the injury kicked in. Then I rooted for Na but things didn't go her way in the finals. A very disappointed Slam for me although it can be good for others whose faves doing well. I enjoyed watching lots of matches though, so I guess it's not that bad after all.

Re: Now I usually get sick of all the naysayers..

I always enjoy the Slams in the beginning. I enjoy watching players who don't get a lot of air time. Then it starts fizzling once the top players start playing each other. I know that sounds odd because you'd think that the top players against each other would result in a great match, but in my opinion the top players produced some flop matches.

One of my most enjoyed matches this AO was Doi - Martic in Round 1.

Maybe it's just a personal preference nowadays. I'm personally tired of Pova/Azarenka or Aga/Azarenka or Kerber/anyone else

Thats the biggest deal for me. Azarenka really has to start putting the sport itself higher in her priorities, shes really not helping herself or the game with her attitude. And its blatently obvious that despite the tough 'I dont care' attitude she tries to put across she does care what people think about her. For all the crap people gave Wozniacki for her game at least she was a great #1 in terms of exposure for the WTA.

I dot get how her fans can be so happy and pretending theres nothing wrong after the absolutely hammering in the media she got from it. Whether her image is repaired is doubtful.

Re: Now I usually get sick of all the naysayers..

I don't have high expectations of slams hence I'm not disappointed. They also have their ups and downs as other tournaments. The winner beats her draw, which usually falls nice apart, and that's it. Onto to the next event.

Well, Vika is winning slams and showing mental strenght, which is the goal of tennis. The world is not about what media think or say. Tennis is a sport, and we have a number one who's winning. That's all.

It was definitely boring as hell
I suppose the only great thing happening is (finally) the youngsters coming through - Robson always a giant killer - Sloane reaching SF by taking out Rena (injured or not)
