So Serena will probably become #1 over the next couple months without playing a match
Right? Serena probably won't play before Miami, but she did the same thing last year - whereas Vika won both Doha and Indian Wells last year...

Of course that's possible and I think she has a fair shot. But that is the only way this scenario doesn't come to fruition, right?

Wimbledon + Olympics + US Open + YEC is more than enough to not have to do anything for the next couple of months to take the #1 spot.

In 2012 those 4 big tournaments in Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami went something like this. Winner, finalist and semi-finalists with their ranking points.
Doha 2012: Victoria Azarenka (900), Samantha Stosur (620), Agnieszka Radwanska (395) & Marion Bartoli (395).
Dubai 2012: Agniezska Radwanska (470), Julia Görges (320), Caroline Wozniacki (200) & Jelena Jankovic (200).
Indian Wells 2012: Victoria Azarenka (1000), Maria Sharapova (700), Angelique Kerber (450) & Ana Ivanovic (450).
Miami 2012: Agniezska Radwanska (1000), Maria Sharapova (700), Marion Bartoli (450) & Caroline Wozniacki (450).
As we can see Victoria Azarenka is a defending champion in Doha and Indian Wells, Agnieszka Radwanska is a defending champion in Dubai and Miami, and a semi-finalist in Doha, and Maria Sharapova was a runner-up in Indian Wells and Miami in 2012. On the other hand Serena Williams and Na Li don´t have many points to defend.

Serena is actually in the entry lists of Doha and Dubai, Whether she will play or not, i highly doubt it, specially with what happened in the Australian Open, but i hope she plays Doha and wins and claim the no. 1 spot.

I don't think that draw in Doha /Dubai/IW can be more cakewalk-ish than on AO this year
