Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

As an elite singles player just to lift a Grand Slam trophy that has eluded you in singles? Let´s be honest most top singles player could win one of these, if they put some effort into it. So would you, and at what stage? Early in your career to taste Slam victory, try all the time, pick your spots and partners carefully, wait more toward the end of your career?

Not true, playing doubles needs a completely different mentality and technique. Just because you're an amazing singles player doesn't mean you'll be amazing at doubles.

To answer your question, I wouldn't. I'd want the personal glory of winning a slam rather than sharing it wih someone else.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

I would. Definitely. You enter the history books etc. Particularly at Wimbledon when you can hang out in the Champions' Locker Room.

Of course its tiny compared to a singles slam. but assuming the premise of the OP is true and I can't win a singles then yeah I would. Certainly a doubles, maybe not so much a mixed (I mean look at Jankovic )

Certainly not the likes of Sharapova. Have you seen the sick exchanges at net in doubles? Can you remotely think of Sharapova succeeding at that?

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

I think Radwanska should consider of it at some point. I don't think she'll win a slam in singles, unless she gets some Clijsters luck with all the best players retired/injured.

As much as for now I think she should be avoiding any doubles (and these not-needed tournaments *cough* Auckland *cough* Sydney) to be the competition for the stronger players and collect these slam high singles rounds + hope for circumstances. But, in like 6-7 years from now, she should definitely give it a try in doubles (I don't suppose she'd be good for mixed). It's completely in her reach

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

are you alluding to Errani here

single and double are very different games. The way you put it make double slam title looked like some leftovers for lesser players to vulture. Winning double slam may not be as easy as you think and by no means compensate your single career. so what's the point of "just to win a slam",to satisfy your ego or hide your sense of insecurity that you are not actually a single slam winner?

Errani's won three doubles slams already, so obviously not.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

If more women played mix they might do a better job of returning Serenas serve.

Her serve is as fast and at least as well placed as some of the very best mens.

((ps. Nadia seems to be failing miserably in trying to do what you say )

Ask Zvonareva and Safina if their doubles taste as good as a single slam.

No need to ask anybody. It is pretty obvious it does not taste the same, nobody said the opposite

I would, for sure.
As peoples said, you enter in history but you're not being as famous as the singles champion.

Errani is just lucky to have a good doubles partner.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

I have been watching a lot of the doubles at this tournament and it has become pretty evident that most of the singles players are really rubbish doubles players. They win a few matches because they have good strokes, but once they get to a seasoned doubles pair who play smart doubles tactics they get beaten.

It shows up especially in mixed. The good doubles players return the men's serve better, and serve smarter to minimise the advantage their opponents get from the return. They also know how to make better use of their male partner, and are smarter and more comfortable at net.

It's not just the women either. Novak Djokovic is hands-down one of the worst doubles players in the ATP top 50. I have seen matches where he is playing with a little known doubles specialist, and the opponents will actually target Djokovic as the weaker partner. And it will work, and they will win.

Marat Safin was the same. Brilliant singles player, but couldn't find his way around a doubles court with a white cane and a seeing eye dog.
