Re: Is Sloane Stephens the most popular American in the WTA?
She's got some serious growing up to do. And honestly, she's no different than the previously hyped and potential 'breakouts' of the recent past (Oudin, Ashley Harkleroad, etc...) .
If she is able to accept that her constituents use various methods to motivate themselves, for example, she will have come a MIGHTY long way towards being comfortable out on court. If she can't even accept this, then she won't last very long. And the hype that usually follows a young and talented player will have all been, as is typical, in vain.
I wish her well however.
She could be a future slam winner, what with her potential and genetics being as they are.

Re: Is Sloane Stephens the most popular American in the WTA?
She hasn't got "hate" yet cuz she hasn't done anything big, hasn't been a threat to anyone's faves yet. If she keeps on climbing tho, watch her get a few haters. I think Sloane is popular but not as much as Venus or Serena for sure. She's more charismatic than a McHale or a Lepchenko and she's better than King or Mattek at the moment so of course she'll seem more supported. I expect Keys to because much more liked than Stephens, hopefully both of them will keep on improving and offer another duo of great players to the americans.

Completely different? She's basically the second coming of Venus really, she's more athletic than Serena at her age (which is why I compared her to Venus) and she and early Venus basically played a similar style (with Venus' backhand and movement slightly better)

I think it's because you wouldn't have said that about a player who would have had a very similar game to the williams but wouldn't have been african-american.

Yeah. Look at the BS the USTA are putting Taylor Townsend through, who just happens to be black and the World Junior number 1. Poor girl isn't even allowed to defend her title because of a pathetic excuse by the USTA.

Tons? Really? The WS didn't face tons so that's very unlikely. There'll be a few bigots but so what. There's always some people griping for one reason or another. Funny that you don't see fit to wax about the important stuff like the tons of people of various ethnicities who do support Stephens, Keys, Watson and many other players.

Hmmm .I duuno. To me it seems like the interest in her has been at a pace matching her growth. Plus the others you mention never made it inside the top-30.
My personal "easy now . wait and see" is Keys. I like her game much more than that of Stephens.

lol well I don't think it was racism since racism would imply that it is something negative lol and I don't think being a William sister would be negative. Just tried to understand why someone would say it's "racist" to say Stephens is a Williams. They said that only cuz she's african-american cuz there's no way her game is similar to Serena or Venus lol.

Actually, so do I.
BUT...
I'm taking a 'wait-and-see' position before jumping on any other player's bandwagon.
The player I support next MUST be mentally strong and fearless when facing her opponent.
And she at least has to possess a formidable game and style of play that is relevant in today's game.
Both Keys and Sloane have plenty of time to grow, so we'll have to see how they evolve.

No. Most people have not heard of her who aren't tennis fanatics.
Most popular on TF? Still...no.
