But other than that, it still depends. A player who was consistently in the mix and played in a strong era and finished with one slam might be considered a great player of his/her era, while another player with a spotty record in weak era and multiple slam wins might not really be called great.

I'd also argue the term "great" is a bit vague. There are players (even slamless ones like the ones you mentioned) who are arguably "great" for their era, but are not great in terms of the history of the game.

From a historic point of view, right now the great club is pretty much limited to one. (Venus is a member, but you can't call her great on her current form).

If you just look at active players, the list is much bigger. Martha is very close to joining the club, but IMHO she really needs a big win over her nemesis. Greatness isn't just about what you won, it's also about who you beat.

Great post, especially the bolded part.

As for me, the number of Grand Slams is only one criterion among others, although the most prestigious. The amount of titles you won in your career should be considered, as well as the time you spent among the best players, the quality of your opponents, and so on.

In terms of GS, I would say 7-8 make you one of the best players ever.

To be a great player I would say 5 and over but to be one of the greatest all time I would say at least double diggets.

Re: How many Majors should player win to be called "one of the greatest players"?

Open era based I´d put it in five categories:

0-1 Slams, weeks at #1, longevity, YEC, +10 titles, overall record: A lot of players fit that category. That group probably includes 35-40 players and has a very wide range between the best and worst in that category.

2 Slams, A rather elusive in between group that currently only has four members: Mauremso, Austin, Kuznetsova and Pierce.

3-5 Slams, with an otherwise strong career, for example a YEC, some Olympic medals, Doubles/Mixed Slams, weeks at #1, +15 significant titles and a good overall record absolutely put you in the great category.

6-9 Slams, a cut above the great category.

+10 Slams, now we enter the greatest of all time discussions.

7 or 8. Unless you're Legend, in which case 5 is enough.

This so much.

Even if you say that that having 7 or 8 sets a bar above someone who has 5, people generally group Hingis, Henin and Venus in the same group, now why would that be?!

Re: How many Majors should player win to be called "one of the greatest players"?

I consider several factors.

1-If the player has completed a career grand slam
2-If the player has won a large number of slams over a number of years
3-If a player has been number 1
4-If a player has been at the top of the game across a generation or two

The short answer is a minimum of four slams with preference for career grand slam.

Helen Wills Moody 19 Slams
Suzanne Lenglen 8 slams

I think this list pretty much sums up who the greatest players are.

Re: How many Majors should player win to be called "one of the greatest players"?

I think it's enough if a player has a career slam +2 other slams. That means 6 slams. If player doesn't have a career slam, then needs to have at least 10 slams. BUT, IMO player still can be one of the greatest if she has more than 7 slams and is dominant in one of all four slams. (e.g Venus with her Wimbledons or Henin with Roland Garros...)
But it's really difficult to discuss about that. I think Martina Hingis is very close to be called one of the greatest.

Didn't Suzanne Lenglen only compete against French players at the French Open?

No, she won several Wimbledon's.

I know the argument can be made about how the game was in the 1920's but you can only beat the person on the other side of the net and in the 1980s and 1990s it was quite normal for a Martina N, Chrissy, Steffi or Monica to go though the first week dropping only a few games.
