Don`t know how many messages she gets anyway but I think it`s not a bad idea to support her and wish good luck via p.m.
The more the better, so we should do it all today.

Thanks. Mona won't play tomorrow but she will probably ruin my whole week if she loses. I can't believe only NOW I noticed that Wimbledon starts on 24/6 (my birthday). That's one more reason to love Wimbly I guess. It's my fav event (AO is a close 2nd).

Then let's hope you will get a subsequent birthday present from Mona in the form of a nice win.

This is a slam so there must be a coach with her. Right?

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Mona really needs to stop trying to play percentage tennis. I want Stuttgart 2012 Mona back.

Do you mean "percentage tennis" with regard to her serve?

We can't be sure about it. There is still no tourcoach mentioned on Mona's website. On her WTA-profile you can only find her homecoach Maik Schürbesmann and her mum as coaches. Mortensen was mentioned there a few weeks ago, but since recently he is not listed there anymore.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

In a slam you can't have on court coaching anyway, so although she loses something if she has no coach, it is not as big a deal in my opinion as in normal wta tournaments when coaching is possible. However in general I get the sense that Mona would benefit from having someone with her throughout the year.

I agree but I would put it another way, because I like the term percentage tennis but think it is misused by commentators.

Mona needs to play tennis that is statistically more likely to win.
I define that as percentage tennis, but many commentators don't understand it properly. Obviously percentage tennis should be the tennis that provides the best probability of winning. It isn't about playing "safe", it's about playing "most likely to win" tennis. Depending on your own abilities this will require different strategies to implement.

Too many commentators get hung up on "first serve percentage". But if you get 75% of first serves in and win only 50%, you're probably going to lose your serve.

If you get 50% in and win 75%, your chance of holding is excellent, depending on how well you do on second serve. So it's more important to look at percentage of points won when serving. Every time they have a slam you can see the players with the highest first serve percentage. They are all weak servers. No big server averages much more than 60-65% first serves in unless they are red hot.

In my opinion there is no reason to take pace off the first serve unless you are doublefaulting a lot that day, or your opponent is killing all your second serves. You might experiment with some slightly slower first serves if the surface is skiddy and you think it will still be good enough, but you need to adjust it as you see the results.

Tennis is entirely a game about trying to control probabilities.

In essence, you need to make your side of the court the safer side to be playing on. You will win if your side of the court is safer. There are two main methods to do this. Each player should either do a mixture of these two things or specialise in one.

Method 1 (defense): make your own side incredibly safe by never missing and running everything down.
Method 2 (offense): make your opponent's side full of danger by hitting shots that they cannot reach or control.

Great players usually have a good mixture but do have specialties.

Both methods have weaknesses- if you defend but hit too conservatively the opponent will hit winners past you. Essentially you will have failed to make your own side safer.

If you attack but lack precision you will miss before you can hit the winner. You will also have failed to make your own side safer.

Mona is quite quick but not especially talented in defense. Especially on the forehand wing her defense is questionable. She is more of a shotmaker. Ideally, she would also improve her defense a lot too, but she should focus on making her opponent's side difficult to survive on- she has the shotmaking to do so, in attack and counterattack, so long as she gets the right balance of calculated risk taking. I'm still not convinced she is comfortable enough on the grass, but first round is definitely winnable.

A lot comes down to mindset as well.

The best playing mindset is to feel that you are rising to a challenge.

In order of worst to best:
Feeling down - angry - feeling pressure - facing a challenge.

Mona has spent too much time recently in the first 2 or 3 mindsets.

Amazing tennis analysis from you as usual. Wish you were her coach, Howie. You explained exactly what I meant but I can't describe/analyze it like you did. Thank you. Nothing more needs to be said.
