There is a quite big difference being seeded 8 Vs seeded 9 .. Fingers crossed, come USO, Caro will be into the top 8.

Hopefully, she can get to the QF ..

Tough draw, Caro seems to draw Serena quite often lately.

She cannot afford to do this against Maria because she is not going to gift her as many errors as Kerber did.

And that's another thing - errors. She wasn't effective in making Maria commit enough of them. In the past she knew how to force the opponent to self-destruct but in the final yesterday she just couldn't. And Sharapova is a type of player who can be made to do that. Against Vika and Aga she tends to make lots of errors and then mentally 'collapse'. I think that to win against a player like her Caro needs to simulate those two and their strategies more. She'll never beat Sharapova trying to play aggressively, she'll make far too many errors and not enough winners. So, the only way left is to somehow outsmart her and mix it up.
I agree. Sharapova poses a different problem than Kerber though. It's more difficult to get Maria involved into long rallies than Angelique because Maria goes for the winner as soon as possible. And although it will never be one of her strenghts, she moves better than she used to as well. I don't think that there are any easy solutions for Caro to beat these power hitters when they are on, but trying to mix it up as much as possible and a better serve (and especially a better second serve) must be part of it.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Obviously, the main goal is to get to Li.
Thats the most important part of this whole summer, that Caro re-establishes herself as an elite player who gets past the noncontenders.
If she gets to Li, she hasnt played since January and can be erratic.
A success to get to Li. tremendous to get to Serena.

Caroline Wozniacki vs BYE
Lucie Hradecka vs Q
Q vs Garbine Muguruza
BYE vs Anastasia Pavyluchenkova
Varvara Lepchenko vs BYE
Marina Erakovic vs Irina-Camelia Begu
Anna Tatishvili vs Kiki Bertens
BYE vs Na Li

Close matches against Kerber and Cornet. I have to say I was not impressed by Caroline`s tennis at Indian Wells. I still think she is far away from her best form, not satisfied with the level of her play. Caroline must improve her serve. The positive thing this week to me was her attitude, her fighting spirit.
Two can play at this game...Sharapova was lucky Azarenka withdrew. I don't think she would have beaten her.

A close match against Kerber was sort of to be expected given that three of their last 4 meetings were close. Their last match was 6-4 in the 3rd set and Caro's previous last win against Kerber in Copenhagen in 2011 was close with Kerber even serving for the 1st set. As for the Cornet match, first matches of tournaments can be rough a lot of times and the pretty slow conditions probably helped Cornet out.

I'd say Caro's level of play was good at Indian Wells.

Which would mean her first match won't be televised as there are no cameras until Friday (at least as far as I can see). Why is Serena opening on Thursday before TV anyway?

I think it has to do with Miami having a saturday Wta final and wanting players to generally have a day off between singles matches.

I think they also want to have their other headlining player, Djokovic, not play the same day.

It's pretty bad for wanting to see Caro matches. Thursday isn't televised full stop. Then the projected 3rd round. Serena vs whoever, Venus vs Stephens, Radwanska vs Barthel if they happen are certain to be 3 of the 4 televised matches. Then you have Li potentially vs an american, Caro's match, Bartoli vs Goerges, Kvitova's match...

If that's the case, then I think it's a bad idea. Yes, movement is important but so is being able to handle power/not being so overwhelmed by power.

My biggest fear for Caro going into the final is it seems to be her defensive capabilities that have declined the most, for whatever reason she just cannot put in a rock like performance atm. Caro has able to put in higher winners recently because she was being able to get on the front foot, I couldn't see how she was going to do that vs Maria, and unfortunately it pretty much played out that way. Yesterday you had an example of Caro barely want on the offensive in the entire match, which isn't necessarily terrible but if you are doing that you can't be gifting 19 unforced errors in 16 games (albeit I can think of 1 of these that did come off her going on the front foot in one of the few times she played a well constructed point and then missed the smash ), you have to be giving your opponent nothing in both unforced errors and length.

With regard to Radwanska vs Sharapova I haven't watched that match recently to have it too refreshed, but what comes to me is that Radwanska was able to keep the match close consistently, she kept scoreboard pressure on Maria, which she wilted under in both sets at the end. Caro simply was putting no doubt in Maria's mind at all. Part of this was down to Maria, she was worse in Miami, she returned awfully that day, but I would imagine without actually being able to prove it that Radwanska also kept a better length making it a lot harder to attack her.

The solution is Caro has either got to find away to get on the front foot in rallies vs the very top players, or she has got to get back her rock like consistency from the back of the court and be making single digit unforced errors in matches like this. The worry would be she hasn't really put in a day of that sort of consistency from the back of the court in a long time.
Aga's shots are also typically flatter which makes them more difficult to attack.

It's a different skillset and mentality to have a 5/6 winners to 5/6 unforced errors performance vs a 15/16 winners to 15/16 (two sets for all these numbers) unforced errors performance.

I looked through Caro's winners & unforced errors totals from 2011 Toronto til now and found only 1 match where Caro had single digit winners and unforced errors (or the 3 set equivalent). Caro had 9 winners and 7 unforced errors in the 2nd round of the French Open in 2012 against Gajdosova.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

I wouldnt go overboard analyzing this one match, just like Maria losing to Caro 16 26 in 2011 didnt mean she was finished. She made the Miami final.
Maria showed why she's good on clay now. She can hit thru a slow court, and you have to win crucial points to stay in the match.
Dubai & IW were very good. Lets see how she handles Miami.
