Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Giorgi lost her next match to Vinci, then lost her round 1 match in Quebec City to Davis. Davis lost round 1 in US Open 60 60 to Navarro.
So there are no questions that Caroline played terribly to lose 8 of the last 11 games to Giorgi.
The question is: Are the good days totally over? Off this year, she's far away from contending for majors

The ideal time to get used to each other and perhaps experiment a bit imo. You don't want to tinker with your game or try to find out what might work and what doesn't right before or during the AO. 2014 should be a fresh start and she shouldn't waste half of it away on finding "the new Caro." The new Caro should be there at the start of 2014, eager to get going.
Exactly. I think Caro badly needs to move on from Piotr not least because I think her problems are technical -e.g. Forehand breaking down under pressure.

But I don't think Caro's heart is in getting a new coach and if she had her way - it would be Piotr for the rest of her playing days. Remember it's Piotr who wants to step down at the end of the year. Now that the USO is over - that's what worries me about her right now. The whole thing is looking more and more like it could just drag on with nothing happening.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

After watching her last loss, I think we have to lower expectations.
Even with a full time coach, its possible the days of top 3 and slam semis is over.

The question for Caro is: Can she find a good coach who can actually help her? If she's working hard and this is the result, its possible no coach will get her back to where she was.

It's the top 10 active players. Kvitova is #11 but I haven't included the retired Marion Bartoli.

Looks like it's only top 10 players. Caro wouldn't be in the top 10 of every category.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Caro has so many issues to deal with.

1.) Her Game – she should develop/enhance/improve her game in total. See for example Vika. She’s totally a New Player compared 2-3 years ago. That’s what dedication and commitment can do. Again, I am not saying Caro has no dedication/commitment when it comes to tennis. What I am trying to raise up is she needs more of that.
2.) Balance her Personal Life / Pro Tennis Life – I think she’s more time with her love affair. Again, this is my point of view only (coz last time I posted there are so many reactions).
3.) Revamp her Team specifically find a New Coach – Piotr almost gave up with her Daughter. We need a Coach who can dictate to Caro. But I think that is far fetch given with Caro’s personality “I don’t want a coach who over-controls me”.
4.) Mental Toughness – You can easily see in her matches that she contends a lot of things. From the line man’s call, the sound from the other court etc…easily get distracted in short. Plus, she easily loses hope and get frustrated. Sometimes your greatest opponent is yourself.
5.) Denial – she tends to get satisfied with her current game and form. I think everybody agrees.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

To me, the lack of mental toughness is the biggest change.
Caro used to win almost every first set, and kept competing all match.
Which is hard to do, so maybe she just cant do it anymore.
I remember Tokyo 2010 when she beat Vika & Dementieva in a row in long 3 setters. She had a big lead against Azarenka in set 3 then it got close. Against Elena it was 3-3 in set 3, then Caro pulled away.
But she fought thru both matches, against very good players.
In Tokyo & Beijing in 2010, Caro only lost 1 first set, to Dementieva. Thats in 2 Tier I's. lost one first set total in 10 mathes, against Azarenka, Radwanska, Dementieva, Kvitova, Zvonareva, Ivanovic, Errani, Pavlyuchenkova, etc..

So when I see her making unforced errors on huge points againt Giorgi, or Voegele, or Pervak, or Mchale, many others.. maybe she just cant do it anymore.

Its very difficult to be close to #1 or make several deep slam draws.
But this major was a perfect situation. Pennetta and Hantuchova were able to get thru their draws. That used to be a given for Caroline, that she would come thru a draw

Mentally, she just doesnt have that focus, the ability to play well in big moments

I think of it all as two problems that need addressing:
  1. Her game (and that's technical and your point 1) and
  2. What's she going to do to address how to improve (and that's really points 2, 3, and 5 and the immediate priority on those points is to find the right coach and the frustrating thing is that nothing seems to be happening).
I don't think a coach should be saying do this and do that and over-controlling her. At her level - it's got to be a two way process where the player believes not just in the mind - but in the inner body when things don't work in a match - that what you worked on with your coach is right and you are doing the right thing. If that relationship breaks down and the player doesn't get to feeling deep down that what she is trying is right - it's not going to work.

The problem with Caro I think is that it's gone beyond that. I believe she's just fixed in her mind that what she really wants is Piotr for the rest of her playing days and I'm concerned that she won't even give a coach a chance when the coach is a good technical coach and one who could build up a good rapport and understand that Caro must feel it's working inwardly - not just in her mind. And I think that is why nothing seems to be happening on this front - that Caro is just not enthusiastic about the whole thing.

That leaves your point 4 - Mental Toughness. I think this can only come after addressing my two points. I don't think you can just say I'll try to be mentally tougher and it happens. It's easier if you have a serve like Serena and when it gets tight - you just fire down a couple of aces. For players like Caro - it's much harder. She did have mental toughness once when she was #1. But compared to then - her forehand has become a real liability when put under pressure and her backhand is not as good either.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Caroline started her year up a set against Pervak and lost, with her dad calling her a clown with a microphone on him..
She ended any hope for a good year last week, up a set against Giorgi and lost 8 of the last 11 games.

So now she has a lot of time to decide what to do. She has a comfort zone with her dad and adidas team. She can pretty much run off with Rory whenever she wants.
If she hires a full time coach, it cuts her freedom down, and very possible that she wont improve anyway.

In her last match, her backhand was ordinary, her serve ordinary, her volleying was weak, her forehand very weak.
Her effort level was tremendous but her level of game fell to an awful level.

I would have cleaned house a long time ago. Back when she was talking about mystery coaches, and hiring Sanchez but still her dad was there constantly.

Now even a new coach seems very iffy, because her game is so weak now

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

All these issues surrounding Caro, it is actually being taken for granted by her opponent. They are 100% aware that Caro is Vulnerable and Fragile opponent. We all know other coaches Scout information too – and for Caro they don’t need to. It is much well publicized all the problems she is going through now… She never INTIMIDATES Opponents. Rather, she radiates OPPORTUNITIES for Unseeded and 100+ Rank Players to be known..Beating Caro is like an immediate Headline especially if you are a Low Ranking Player. Example. “Qualifier Giorgi has beaten #8 Seed Wozniacki”. Now everybody knows Giorgi. 
