Re: Violence against women, including rape
Zuma shocked at Western Cape gang rape
Johannesburg (Feb. 7, 2013) President Jacob Zuma has expressed shock and outrage at the reported rape, mutilation and subsequent death of Western Cape teenager Anene Booysen. The 17-year-old Bredasdorp girl was raped - possibly gang-raped. She was also disembowelled but was still alive when she was found. Before she died in hospital, she was able to name one of the men she said had attacked her.
Jonathan Quinton Davids, 22, appeared in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of rape and murder. Another suspect was arrested on Wednesday night, police said. “The whole nation is outraged at this extreme violation and destruction of a young human life,” Zuma said in a statement on Thursday.
“This act is shocking, cruel and most inhumane. It has no place in our country. We must never allow ourselves to get used to these acts of base criminality to our women and children.” The president called on the courts to “impose the harshest sentences on such crimes, as part of a concerted campaign to end this scourge in our society”.
Zuma also conveyed his deepest condolences to Anine’s family and vowed that government would never rest until the perpetrators and all those who rape and abuse women and children, are meted with the maximum justice that the law allows.
Meanwhile, the Congress of the People’s Beryl Ferguson said of the gang rape: “"This means that the department of women, children and people with disabilities, as well as the police and communities, have shown a total inability to deal with this problem in a decisive manner."

Rape and Killing of 3 Young Sisters Shocks India
By ASHOK SHARMA Associated Press
NEW DELHI February 21, 2013 (AP)
Police were searching villages in western India on Friday for suspects in the rape and killing of three young sisters, as Indians still angry over the fatal gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus in December face another heinous sexual attack.
The bodies of the sisters — aged 7, 9 and 11 — were found Feb. 16 in a village well in Bhandara district in Maharashtra after they had gone missing from school two days earlier, said police officer Abhinav Deshmukh. The area is more than 1,000 kilometers (630 miles) south of New Delhi, the capital.
The victims' mother said police did not take the case seriously and did nothing for several days until villagers held protests. Deshmukh said Friday that 10 teams of 30 investigators were working on the case and that he was confident they would find the killers soon.
Police first dismissed the deaths as accidental, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The girls' mother accused police of a shoddy investigation and said they did nothing for two days. Enraged villagers forced shops to close, burned tires and blocked a national highway passing in the area for hours earlier this week, demanding justice.

Ram Singh’s father, Mangelal Singh, said his son had been raped in prison by other inmates and had been repeatedly threatened by inmates and guards. Nevertheless, he said he visited his son four days ago and the man appeared fine and gave no hint of any despair that could drive him to take his own life.

Can't say I feel sorry for his son...

Ram Singh also had a badly injured hand and would have been unable to hang himself, his father said, speaking from outside his small home in a New Delhi slum.
“Somebody has killed him,” he said, saying he would push for a top-level investigation from India’s Central Bureau of Investigation into the death.
Mangelal Singh said he feared for the safety of another son who is also on trial in the rape case.

What is the matter with his sons?

if i were him, i would not say anything. Top-level investigation??? This is already the best outcome for his son, who told him to do this brutal inhuman act?

Swiss woman 'gang-raped' in central India
A Swiss woman has been gang-raped by a group of men in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police say.
The woman was camping with her husband at a village in Datia district on Friday during a cycling trip when they were attacked by seven or eight men.
The assailants overpowered the husband before gang-raping his wife.
The victim, who is reported to be 39 years old, has been admitted to hospital in Gwalior. She is conscious and has spoken to the authorities.
C S Solanki, the superintendent of police in Datia, told the PTI news agency that eight suspects had been arrested and were being questioned in connection with the case.
The tourists had been cycling from Orchha to Agra, a distance of about 250km (155 miles), when they decided to camp overnight at a village.
One report cited the victim's husband as saying that the group of men had approached them at about 21:30 (16:00 GMT). They then began beating him with wooden sticks before tying him up and sexually assaulting his wife in front of him, he is reported to have added.
The assailants stole the couple's valuables, including 10,000 rupees ($185) and a mobile phone, before fleeing into the woods.
The incident comes three months after the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old female student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, which triggered widespread protests against the treatment of women in India.
On Monday, one of the suspects was found dead in prison. Police said Ram Singh hanged himself, but his family suspect he was murdered.
