Re: Top 100 by better forehand or backhand.

Cadantu - forehand and not even close

There are a lot of players, though, who have a wing you would call 'better' because they are able to produce more amazing shots with it, but it is usually the first one to break down or the one with a smaller margin for errors. So is Sorana's forehand for example who has days when you are lucky it's landing somewhere near the baseline while she can unleash some bombs with it as well. Her backhand is still the more consistent (never thought I'm using this word talking about her) of her wings.

I'm also not sure if Monica's slice is enough to make her forehand be better than her backhand. It was awful for most parts of the year.

Re: Top 100 by better forehand or backhand.

Serena goes through phases.

At Wimbledon and USO her BH was much better than her FH, but at the YEC her FH was performing better. Obviously she can generate more power on her FH, but footwork issues mean it goes off much often than her BH.

Re: Top 100 by better forehand or backhand.

Hlavackova - definitely FH. Same with Panova.

Benesova has a nice CC BH but I'd say her FH DTL is her best shot. Sadly most of the time it's neither.

Rybarikova really doesn't have a better BH than FH.

Agree with you here. That's why it's so diffcult to say which is the better wing for some players. I will change Sorana's better wing to the BH in my list since you watched her way more than me.

I'm waiting for Shvedbarilescu's opinion on this.

Re: Top 100 by better forehand or backhand.

I'm surprised at how many of the top players have better backhands. And it's not a marginally better shot. Maria and Azarenka's backhands are significantly better than their forehands.

Thanks. I haven't seen Hlavackova play before so I didn't know her better wing. Maybe I saw her play just for a minute against some player but that's it.

So you think Benesova's FH is better. That was a diffcult one tbh and I couldn't determine her better wing. She is good on both wings when she is playing well. Mmmm I would change it to FH if 2 other posters agree with you.

That's true. Quite a few players produce most of their winners and flashy shots with their forehand, but they also produce their most awful, embarrassing errors with it. The backhand is usually the steadier and more reliable shot.

this may be true if by "better" you mean the more stable wing, but the shot which does the most damage for Maria is by far her forehand. She won all of her big titles when her FH was firing and not breaking down. And I'd say these days this is the wing that wins her matches more often than not

Re: Top 100 by better forehand or backhand.

I'd put forehand as Maria's and Venus' best wings. Maria, playing well, hits a gazillion winners off her forehand and she runs around her backhand very often. Venus has had a better fh for years. I'd also argue that Cirstea has a better forehand than backhand.

TBH I wouldn't say there's much in it. Both of them can be good but I think Iveta's FH has a few more dimensions while she generally plays the BH cross-court.

Benesova's grip is rather rigid on her BH too, and thus the stroke is less fluid. Benseova's forehand is a more unrestrained shot. Much better stroke production.

I would actually argue that Serena's backhand at it's fundamental, technical state is better than her forehand. On the forehand, Serena can snatch at the ball, and tends to drag her upper body across too much, and her contact points gets distorted. Plus, she doesn't move her feet as consistently well into the FH, unlike the BH where she always maintains a solid base, terrific shoulder-turn, hip rotation etc, etc.
