I thought they'd give this award to Vika.

Wow wasn't expecting this. It's a bit unfair to Vika that she wasn't recognized for her great season when Wozniacki and Jankovic won this award with 0 slams. Playing Fed Cup, winning Olympics and YEC must have been the tie-breakers for Serena because history tells us that slams don't matter to ITF

Congrats to Serena! Very well deserved. An absolutely amazing year! Much respect. She's the cream of the crop, the best of the best. Hope she continues to excel even more in 2013.

I don't think in this context it is fair to compare Vika's season to Caro's or to Jelena's. There was a more accomplished tennis player in 2012 and she won the ITF award. Let's hope Vika can build on the year she had and continue to improve and impress in 2013.

Re: Serena Williams Named ITF Champion For 2012
Well deserved.
How can you award this to Azarenka when she lost to Serena 5 times in a row this year?
Three of the five were ITF events, of the three two were Grand Slams and the other being Olympics.
On top of that, Azarenka lost to Serena on all surfaces possible.
Clay - Madrid
Hard - US Open
Grass - Wimbledon/Olympics
Indoor Hard - Istanbul

There was a more accomplished player in 2008 too: Serena. Clijsters was also more accomplished than Caro in 2010 but part-time schedule cost her this award. Venus lost it to Hingis with 2 slams+Olympic gold in 2000. These are all slamless winners you see. Vika won a slam and had an amazing streak at the start of the season. As I said in the other thread, do I think her year was better than Serena's? No but she deserved some kind of recognition. ATP automatically gives its player of the year award to the year-end no.1. WTA should do the same. (Is there a WTA award for the year-end no.1?) Then the ITF could give theirs to the player with more slam success and there would be no problem.

Serena won 3 ITF main tournaments(of 5), it won't be fair to give it to anyone not named Serena in 2012, and it's not like Serena was successful only at Slams , she won as much titles as Vika including PM , YEC and 2 Premiers

So did Venus in 2000 but they gave it to Hingis who skipped the Olympics

And to TF anything other than a slam is a glorified exho.
But anyway - Serena won four of the six biggest events of the year and in succession at that. Nobody came anywhere close to doing something like that in the years that Jankovic and Woz won the award.
