This post gave me a great idea
Why not go all the way and make another thread

So during my Kantian walk thought about a suitable topic.
At first thought a poll about the merit and demerit of nationalism could be fun, but eventually settled on a broader theme, hence this.

What caused all the misery and conflicts of mankind?

Monotheism
Capitalism
Imperialism
Racism
Nationalism
Power politics(Realpolitik?)
Men!!!(their inherently aggressive instinct to wage wars)
Materialism
Plague
Lack of resources(oil, water, etc)
Other

Monotheism, we know how Christianity and Islam led to countless sufferings. I think Holocuast can be included in this category as well. Or racism, either way.

Capitalism essentially bred Socialism and Communism, so thought just listing Capitalism would be fine. Widening income gap is now a serious problem globally.

I'm not sure about Imperialism(colonialism): should I make it separate or is it also a byproduct of capitalism.

Nationalism, our dear comrade azdaja argued that Serb nationalism is good in the WWI thread. But is it? Didn't nationalism essentially led to the war: think about pan germanism and slavism. And all the conflicts thereafter.
Nation could now harness considerable population in waging total war: no wonder world war 1 and 2 was the biggest conflict ever, lasting a long time despite the prediction that due to bankruptcy it would end soon.

And vide the countless Hollywood movies about alien invasion: it enabled all the nations to overcome their national conflict and strive for the common good: survival of mankind. Isn't it an indirect indictment of national conflict

Jacques Barzun argues in his book 'Darwin, Marx and Wagner' that darwinism, marxism, wagnerism are essentially dangerous materialism that led to conflicts in the 20th century.

We all know Spanish influenza killed more than WWI itself.
Contacts itself with the Europeans wiped the Americans out. Maybe European men's horniness contributed to it(sexual contact with native women)

Mutiple choices this time, and feel free to post your opinions. Just curious about what you guys think, and if we can educate each other, all the better.
And be nice

There are basically three types of evil that possesses human kind: ignorance, addiction and abuse of power.

Good one. Yeah power so I included power politics. Ignorance I totally agree too. Leads to misunderstanding, then inevitable conflicts..

Addiction to power? Or drugs?

Addiction is mostly self-harming. It could be drugs, sex even technology.

Let's ponder on the Roman poet Terence's maxim:

From Andria (The Lady of Andros):

Ne quid nimis.

Moderation in all things. (Not anything in excess)
Line 61

But Capitalism doesn't pursue moderation, it wants maximum profit.

For similar reason Christianity stood against Capitalism, yet it failed.

Yes, I thought especially monotheism had greater impact.

And religion could be the 'opposite' of materialism, in that it emphasizes the spiritual part. Barzun sort of argued in that vein.

Another maxim on moderation, from Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris:

To quote Gringoire (although his source is a bit unreliable lol: Hugo's intended humour)

"According to Hippocrates,

Id est cibi, potus, somnii, Venus, omnia moderata sint"

Notre-Dame de Paris, Oxford pbk ed. p. 418

Re: Which is the root of all evil!???

Ok fine, technical answer. Evil is an abstract human concept so the root cause is simply human cognition.
