Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

Played tennis 3 weeks ago, i stepped on the balls while i was on the run, sprained ankle badly, till today still on cast boot n crutches, sweling and pain (leg has to be elevated most of the time)! orthopaedis specialist said i got to rest for another 3 weeks before i could walk again n earliest another 3 months before i could play tennis again, is that true?? 3 months ====drive me mad!

Also, what are the good diet can speed up the recovery process?

btw i am 38 y.o

Thanks everybody

Do what the doctor says. You can work on upper body and core excercises in the meanwhile, and plenty of stretching. Stuff you don't make time for when you are mobile. Do not get ahead of what the doctor says. My advice.

Obviously, you'll want to heed your Ortho's advice, but a second opinion from a qualified practitioner wouldn't hurt either.

A couple of questions.

1) has your ortho prescribed any sports rehab exercises? If not find out why.

Generally speaking, the sooner you begin a SUPERVISED sports medicine rehab schedule, the sooner your recovery period will be.

2) how often are you icing it, and I hope you HAVE NOT been applying any heat.

Anyway, good luck and hang in there!

Re: Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

I sprained my ankle last summer, really badly....it took me a week without walking, and 1 month without doing any effort like running. I started to play tennis after that month, it cracked the first time I ran but after it was really hurting again, and then I started to move it more and more doing exercise, stretching it, and the pain went away after a couple of days. Maybe I started a bit early, but I think the exercise help it to recover. I don't know about yours, don't walk on it too much for the next week, and see what will happen within the next weeks, I think you really should wait the amount of time that your doctor told you before walking again on it. You can still begin slowly to walk on it, but not for too long.

And I know that alot of proteins and vitamines in your diet might help you, but I wouldn't bet on that though.

Re: Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

I had a sprain, it hurt to the touch and during running for about two weeks. After that, I said screw it and went and played tennis. It went away by itself. My doctor said that one month was the recommended rehab time, but I'm naughty .

Anyways, I didn't need a cast boot, but three months is very long. If you are diligent with the RICE recovery program, a month and a half to two months should be fine.

Remember, your doctor only knows as much as he himself has been taught and experienced. If you feel like you can slowly return to your groove, do so.

BTW the RICE plan is
Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate

Hope that helps!

PS. NEVER put heat on the ankle. EVER.

Listen to your ortho. But be VERY agressive in explaining your normal level of physical exertion. Once you're past 35, you kinda have to tell everyone involed inthe recovery process where you expect to wind up. Don't let them treat you the way they would a couch potatoe.

As for speeding recovery, there's something I do that works well for me. This isn't medical advice.

It's weight lifting, with a twist. You need to arange some kind of weight lifting that targets the affected area. You do reps with a relatively heavy weight until you exhaust the muscle. This will happen quickly. It IS torn.

Ice the area until it's numb.

Do reps with a relatively heavy weight until you exhaust the muscle.

Ice the area until it's numb.

Do reps with a relatively heavy weight until you exhaust the muscle.

Keeps repeating that til the muscle is so exhausted you can't even do one rep.

Then, if you can, drop the weight and repeat the process.

What this does, in theory, is clean scar tissue out of the area. My ankle and hamstring injuries, treated this way, have healed faster, and with a smooth range of motion.

Re: Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

hi guys about a month ago when I was playing tennis, I was going one way (side way in baseline) and the last min I saw the ball went the other way so I changed direction at the last min and sprained my ankle a little bit. It only hurt a little bit so I kept on playing...it was ok the rest of the day. The next time I played tennis it was ok too, didn't hurt at all. But ever since then it will hurt at weird positions, like when I walk, or run, or just doing casual things and moving my ankle....I think at weird angle it will hurt. It doesn't hurt a lot but it's been a month and pain doesn't diminish when I do get it, maybe 10% less painful since then. So is it something serious should I get someone to look at it? or just rest? Ever since the injury I play tennis almost every other day. (never hurt during playing) I used jogging shoe when injury happened but I am using proper shoes now. not sure if jogging shoes caused the little sprained ankle. So any tips guys? thanks in advance

Re: Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

^^I sprained my ankle worse than you some 2.5 years ago. Couldn't really stand on it all evening and was limping for a few days. Thereafter i experienced same symptoms like you did. No pain with just walking or cycling but sudden flashes of pain when rotating the ankle. Over time these symptoms subsided and since i don't play sports like tennis or soccer it was not much of a problem for me.

So it's not that serious and you're probably over it sooner than i was but it still may take some time. You play tennis so i would have a physician have a look at it.

Re: Need advice on ankle sprained ( grade 2 to 3 torn ligament)...

I badly spraines my ankle 10 years ago.
I couldn't run or play tennis for 6 months.

Since it happened, I've had some minor sprains here and there. My ankle is very weakened and less flexible.

And now I play tennis with a strap, even when I'm only practicing (I bought the same strap as Andy Roddick)
