How come the string of post Olympics retirements never happened?

At the start of the year, everyone on here was predicting the impending retirement of virtually every player over the age of 25 after the Olympic games, so how come that never happened?

I know we lost Gisela Dulko yesterday, but other than her and Clijsters, there have been an unusual lack of retirements this year. Hardly any semi-notable players have called it quits this year either.

Are they any players out there who are officially considering their options, and is there any latest on long-term absentees? (I know Dulgheru is coming back in 2013 - what's the latest on Kleybanova, Szavay etc)

Yeah, I actually thought of the same thing yesterday. Espacially the likes of Tanasugarn, Date Krumm, Pennetta, Schiavone etc. all seem to keep going another year at least.

And I am kinda optimistic, too, now.

Though she WD from Dubai next week, there is hope that Great Granaten Greta will be around for another year.

Might experience some substantial drop in the rankings until March, but nothing new here. Always came back.

Auf geht's, na gyerünk, here we go.

Re: How come the string of post Olympics retirements never happened?

Well, we all started speculating on this a couple years out. The suspects were the Divine One, Clijsters, Henin, Venus, Serena and some of the doubles specialists.

Dementieva and Henin bailed early. We were right about Clijsters. I am actually (happily) surprised at Vee. I didn't really see her settling for being a Top 40 player who's just hanging on for the love of the game ala Frazier. But it's always great to see her, especially when she is able to capture some of her old form.

I also don't think a lot of us expected Serena to have such a renaissance.

Re: How come the string of post Olympics retirements never happened?

Very surprising indeed.

Benesova wants to start a family.
Pennetta and Schiavone's bodies are falling apart.
Zvonareva and Kuznetsova aren't young and face a tough comeback ahead.
Hantuchova can't keep up anymore.
Jankovic doesn't care.

2013 may be the last season for all these players.

Serena's fans hopes and faith were as high as Serena detractor's wishes for her retirement and level to be over. As for Venus, her fighting spirit wasn't put into high regard. Venus isn't going to let anyone but Venus retire her.

Olympics aren't such a big thing in tennis. In many sports where Olympics are the big thing, they make athletes to continue their careers for a couple of years, otherwise they'd retire. On the other hand, in Olympics-central sports, athletes may not anymore find motivation for yet another year that has only MM events. But tennis has the biggest tournaments every year, so if you still have power after the Olympic year, why not continue, especially if you didn't postpone the retirement because of the OG.

So not true....even when everyone was crowning Azarenka the best player earlier in the year, I never doubted that Serena would overcome her injuries and come back strong. I even remember asking you if you thought the level Azarenka displayed was the best the game has been played? I was never convinced by her rise and I am still not. 2013 will be a telling year for a lot of players.

Were there many retirements after the 2008 OG?

He means they were speculating years ago who would retire and who would stay.

Those players have de facto retired (mentally flamed out).

Their physical removal from the tour is a mere formality.

So in the end, we can still say that this year lots of previously big players became irrelevant (= almost equal to being retired).
