East of England Championships, Felixstowe
Although an East of England tournament was held in Filey, North Yorkshire, in the late 1880s/early 1890s, this tournament was only local in nature and never achieved the status of the tournament first held in Felixstowe in 1885. The Felixstowe tournament eventually became a compliment to the North of England Championships (usually held in Scarborough, Yorkshire), the South of England Championships (held in Eastbourne, Sussex) and the West of England Championships (originally held in Bath, but in later years held in Bristol).
The Felixstowe tournament was first called the East of England Championships circa 1889, an indication both of the increase in its status and its growing popularity among the top players. Located in the south-eastern county of Suffolk, Felixstowe has for many decades been a popular seaside resort and is one of many tournaments to have their origins in such a location, not just in the British Isles.
During its early years, the women's singles event was quite modest in nature, sometimes local and sometimes handicap only [HO]. However, as the list below indicates, it became popular with a number of the top players relatively quickly and maintained this popularity almost until its demise.
During the early decades of the tournament's existence, the East of England Championships tournament was usually held around mid-August. In later years it was usually held during the second or third week of July, just after Wimbledon. The East of England Championships survived the upheavals of two world wars and open tennis for fifteen years before it was discontinued in 1983.

Event probably discontinued when in 1975 at South Orange were put clay courts.
* 1931 Pittman and Ridley decided to come to the US "on their own" after being left off their nation's Wightman Cup team. They create a firestorm of controversy when they run to the net and shake hands after splitting sets, announcing they will divide the first prize. No name will go on the trophy and the title is not split, though the tournament director hands both the winners and runnerup prizes to the two ladies to divide. The ladies were surprised at the outburst, stating their action was a common practice back home. Elsie and Joan stated that they wished to default the singles in order to conserve their energy for the doubles final later that afternoon. When their request to play the doubles the next day was denied they formulated their plan to default if sets were split.

Egypt International Championships, Cairo
Held on clay at Gezira Sporting Club.
Not to be confused with the Alexandria International Championships, which usually followed the week after Cairo.
But, according to our yearly threads, in 1937 '39 '46 '50 '52 '53 '55 the name "Egypt International Championships" was assigned to the Alexandria's tournament. I use the winners of Cairo's tournament, but it's need consider this thing and check it again.
In some years there was in Cairo another tournament also, the Cairo Championships, of which I show far down the results that I know. (in 1937 and '39 I use the Cairo Champs. as Egypt International Champs.)
Always according to our yearly threads, in 1954 '63 '64 '65 '66 '71 the Egypt International Championships was named United Arab Repubblic Championships, and in 1960 '68 '69 '72 '76 was named Cairo International.
