so Casey has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup with a foot injury... hopefully she'll be right for the rest of the summer events, but i wonder who will take her place since Sam and Jarka are already committed to Brisbane? maybe Liv will get a call up, or someone more experienced like Rodi... i'm sure the Perth crowd would fall in love with her personality!!

Vekic is an alternate, and she wrote something on her facebook (i think) the other day which sounded like she knew she was going to play. and now that Casey has withdrawn it makes sense that she would be the replacement... kind of, except for the fact she's not Australian.

That won't happen. It's never happened before. Sure, she might get a call up in the middle of the event when someone withdraws (it's happened before), but come on...the tournament hasn't even started yet. They will find an Aussie player, otherwise it would be a PR nightmare that the home team can't even find its own player  |

If Vekic was the replacement, then they would have already mentioned it. This article mentions that a replacement is yet to be announced.

That would be amazing for her.
As for the Vekic suggestion.... Australia would have to pull out completely for her to get a start. They always have a reserve country in case during the event someone gets injured. Casey will be replaced by an Aussie. Being higher ranked doesn't come in to it  - it's a team/country competition.

Actually, a player from another country can fill in for an injured player but that's always happened during the event, not before.
As much as I'd love to see the reaction to Aussie Donna, it's not going to happen
