The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Group II event held in Santa Tecla, El Salvador reached its conclusion on Saturday with Bahamas and Ecuador topping Group B and A respectively. Both nations secured a place in next year’s Group I.
The clash between Bahamas and Dominican Republic on Saturday was going to determine the winner of Group B and therefore the promotion spot. Both nations stepped into the court at the Santa Tecla Country Tennis Club unbeaten and showed that their level was very even from the very beginning. Kerry Cartwright put Bahamas in the path towards victory by beating Michelle Marie Valdez 62 75 but the advantage was quickly neutralized by Francesca Segarelli who defeated Simone Pratt 60 75. The tie after the singles meant that the doubles was going to decide the winner and both pairs fought very hard for the win. Eventually, the Bahamans Cartwright and Larikah Russell managed to prevail 63 57 62 and booked a place in Group I for next year.
In Group A, Ecuador was in a more comfortable situation to reach the promotion. However, they had to avoid a whitewash by Guatemala and clearly exceeded their goal by beating their opponents 2-1. Andrea Weedon, from Guatemala, took the first point against Rafaela Gomez Estrada but the Ecuadorians reacted and took the two remaining points to secure their spot in next year’s Group I with victories from Domenica Gonzalez Palau in singles and again Gonzalez Palau in collaboration with Gomez Estrada in doubles.
