Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

When it comes to GM one last thing and I shut up.
Some of you always say what an ugly place it and how all should stay in SS where we're a happy family etc etc but then you, well, go there. No one is forcing you to.
Also, the ignore function works very nicely to my experience.
I'm not saying that I actually do this stuff all the time (ignore GM and annoying posters) because I do not but then again I don't complain about it very often. Drama is fun sometimes and it really looks like many posters here like it too.
It's pretty sad that the General part of the forum has to be in a state like this because I didn't join TF as a Maria fan only, but as a tennis fan with intention of visiting most parts of the forum. Also I hate how people aren't smart enough not to judge people according to the players they like. I mean do you people here like all Maria fans/ posters on the Siberian Siren? I know I sure don't.
Plus, some of you have displayed various levels of ignorance at times so yeah some of you deserve some of the shit you got.

In case someone actually reads this, focus on the word some here so we don't have misunderstandings.

But most of all we should always remember this it a tennis forum ffs so some of the things we write here sometimes look funny and/or sad in retrospect.

It was a good final today and that's all I was asking for, Maria put up a good fight.
Really happy with the season of course and I hope for a great 2012
But first a well deserved rest for Maria

Just so you know, Maria's Exho with Petra is tomorrow. Do you think we should make an exho thread given the amount she's playing?

I honestly think she should focus less on her serve this offseason than I presume she has done for the past few, and focus on the rest of her game.
Of course its not the serve. It wasnt an issue all year, no matter how many times people bring up the number of DFs and such. And even if she would have better, Serena would punish it the same way.
Her serve is improving every year since 2009. there wont be drastic changes next year, but it will be better again. And thats enough.

there was two really apparent issue with her game this week and all year.
- Return of serve. This final was a joke, she looked like soem junior scrub guessing and jumping in one direction even before Serena's balltoss. She is #2 or something, what the fuck is this? ... And even when she doesnt play against a big server, she plays a full set with Radwanska without even reaching Deuce in any receiving games. Its a joke.
- Netplay. How many times she forced her opponents out wide and they hit a floating slice she could've finish at the net but she did nothign just backpedaling behind baseline and hit another useless groundstroke? Infuriating. She is enough fast to get to the net with 3-4 steps from good position, and even if she'll dump a few volley/drive-volley into the net, it would help much more to build authority on the court. She has to bring back some netplay into her game to shorten points and games, she cant keep up baseline grinding constantly.

Very well said! I still think that Maria can improve the variety of her second serve, especially on the AD side. It doesn't necesserily have to be this fast every time, just better placed.

Maria was giving every ounce of what she had, playing really well at times, and she still looked like an amateur in comparison. Just utterly futile. I have no answers. I see nothing Maria can do to beat her, other than Serena imploding with errors. And you know Serena would never let that happen against Maria.

It just sucks a lot of the fun out of watching women's tennis when you know Serena is always waiting. As scintillating as the Vika win was yesterday, we barely had 24 hours to enjoy it before reality hit again.
Well said.

As Maria said, it took her a long while to figure out how to beat Henin and then she went out and did it more than once.

Don't count Maria out, she will find a way to beat Serena, either in 2013 or later.

True. She is really stubborn and dumb sometimes not mixing up enough. SF against Azarenka, in 2nd set when they played the 15 minute long game she had like 9 gamepoints but she did nothing else just serve to the T. And of course Azarenka was hitting FH return winners with closed eyes because she knew Maria will serve there. It was idiotic.

Exactly! Her percentage of points won on her second serve against great players like Serena/Vika is always really low, because they know where Maria will be serving. Hoepfully she'll work on this aspect of her game as well as all the others during the off-season!

I just don't see it I rewatched the Olympics final the other day, and I really tried to watch it as unbiasedly as I could, and although Serena served extremely well (though, her first-serve % and service speeds were pretty close today to the OG, they just got less reward on slower surface...the only big difference in her serving today was a few more doublefaults), but off the ground I just didn't see the calibre of shotmaking that there was from Serena today. There just weren't that many "WOW!" shots from her in that Olympics match imo (and again, I'm not saying she didn't "deserve" it, she can only beat who's in front of her and it's not her fault that Maria was terrible that day and didn't make Serena play well), whereas there were 3 WOW shots from Serena in just the last game of today's match alone

Agree completely, I mean how many defeats in big matches this year can we attribute to Maria's serve falling apart? The Olympics final she threw in a lot of DFs at crucial times, but in her beatdowns against Vika and Madrid against Serena, it was more her groundgame malfunctioning than her serve.

I agree with you that her return and netplay (or atleast, mid-court game) should be her big focus this offseason. Her footwork on the return is just so much worse this year than it was in 2011 -- so many times when she's receiving mediocre/slow serves, she just sort of stands there and waits for the serves to come to her (and it's really not a case of her just being too ambitious on the return, because most of her misses on 2nd-serve returns are just total mis-hits without much pace on them anyway) whereas her trademark in 2011 was that, when she got a serve in her strike zone, she'd really eat it up and run into the return and have forward momentum. And as you say, she really needs to work on her swing volleys -- this area of her game was atleast better this year than it was in 2011, but she really needs to bring them back up to her 2006 standard - she's NEVER been the type of ballbasher who wins her points with just 1 massive shot, even in her prime she won her points in slightly longer rallies than the average ballbasher, so for that type of game you absolutely NEED to be clinical with putaways.

Also, I'm gonna have to come back to this, but I still think maybe a few chats with a sports psychologist would do her good. Even today, even though she was VERY mentally tough in some ways -- fighting almost as hard as she's ever done and being too stubborn to let the match descend into a beatdown -- I still felt like she wasn't hitting as freely from the back of the court as she was on Saturday. Her crosscourt backhand was scoring huge points when she was really going for it, but she did miss a few crucial opportunities where there she got a shortball from Serena where she could've smoked a shot off that wing (including that crucial deuce point in the penultimate game with Serena serving). I dunno, to me the fact she still wasn't completely relaxed and free says to me she still felt pressured, when there was really no reason to be so when she was a huge underdog.

Anyway, I guess the most positive thing is that, even after holding an on-fire Serena to a respectable scoreline, we can see there were a fair few things she was capable of doing better. Atleast she's FINALLY moving in the right direction in this match-up... be thankful for small mercies I guess

I just don't understand how some Williams fans criticize Maria for not being more competitive vs. Serena when everyone knows she's just much better than everyone else. Makes no sense

I'm very happy with how things played out this week. She continues to botch her winning % in finals but she definitely took a step forward this week. Bring on Australia

So much work for the off season and I am asking myself, when is she gonna do all that? Now she has vacation, then she'll start working then exos come...
Just trolling a bit..
I still enjoy this year today..

So proud of Maria... finally, she kept it close and made Serena earn it. That's all I could have asked from her today.

Thus, Maria's best year ever comes to a close. It's been an absolute blast... highlighted of course by that magical day of June 9. Can't wait for 2013!

Great tournament and great year for Masha
Today was not the expected outcome, but I think she played well and gave a good match. Serena just happened to be serving really well, Masha had trouble guessing the direction.

PS

Did you notice she loved the confetti at the end?
