Matches where players retired to prevent beatdowns?
No signs of injury until suddenly retiring down a huge deficit?
Beijing QF 2012 Sharapova def Kerber 6-0 3-0 ret.

Re: Matches where players retired to prevent beatdowns?
There was one match recently where one player retired 0-5 down or something. Which match was it?

Agree with OP, retirements like that are really unsportsman-like. I respect Justine's game and achievements but that was just disgraceful, especially it being in a GS final. You would never see the likes of Serena, Kim, Venus and Maria etc bail out on a GS final like that.
I'm so disappointed in Angie

Re: Matches where players retired to prevent beatdowns?
Is there history between Kerber and Maria? Is there a reason why Kerber would be desperate to avoid getting a double bagel from Maria?

I doubt there's any past beefs between them, because Maria was actually nicer to her at the handshake than she normally is to other players

Nope, as far as i know, maria and kerber show great mutual respect to each other. This is going to change after tonight's match though. And rightfully so. What a loser.

Re: Matches where players retired to prevent beatdowns?
Well that does make it seem odd that she would retire, I suppose as a top 10 player a double bagel is particuarly shameful but she should have played on even if the result couldn't have been changed.
What is she going to do if she's being destroyed in a major final? Retire like Henin?

Re: Matches where players retired to prevent beatdowns?
We all love a double bagel (especially when a top player is recieving one) regardless of who is giving them. I do feel a little cheated here.
