Re: 'Journey Women' who became top players for a brief period before returning to nor

NEWSFLASH: everyone starts out with a low ranking and it might take some players a couple of years to break through, especially if they don't get WCs thrown their way and have to go through ITF tour and qualifying tournaments. So, Bovinas, Bedanovas, Groenefelds etc. have nothing do with this thread, since they were all on their way to having a solid top 20/30 career before they got sidelined with various issues.

OT: Angeles Montolio. She first reached top 100 in 1999, at the age of 24. She had her career best year in 2001 winning two MMs and reaching the final of another one, ending the season ranked #23. The following season she had two big losing streaks (the second one spanning over more than 10 matches) - with another MM title in between. She fell out of top 100 in the end of the year, and barely played the following year, not winning a single match, and finished her career.

Jeyaseelan in 2000 and then...puff !
edit: even at her peak that season (47 or 49) she still was kind of a journeywoman , but that was the only time she reached top 50 in her career (despite being RU in Bogota in 98) ..

Wasn't she one of the 4 players Venus said she ever got outplayed by?

She's not. Venus's list was completely WTF. Can't remember the others.

My thought in first moment - Rezai. Second - Peer.

Well, if I think at least a minute I`ll write 58 more. There were a lot of these girls who appeared promissing, played 4-5 inspiring matches and disappeared for ever from the same level.

Re: 'Journey Women' who became top players for a brief period before returning to nor

MY question here is, how long do you have to be a lower ranking player before you're considered a 'journeywoman'? And how far do you have to fall, and for how long, to be considered back in that state?

Chakvetadze was the first player I thought of when I saw this thread, but she was a top ten player when she was 21.

Some of the players mentioned here make no sense.

Oudin never was a top player. She beat some top players.

Jankovic isn't a journeywoman. She's a very good player who became a great player for a couple years.

A player who may not QUITE have been good enough to meet these criteria, but who's career had this shape, was Meghann Shaughnessy. She was a top fifteen player from Stanford 2001 to Eatbourne 2002, then she gradually fell into obscurity. But she wasn't off the tour for any prolonged stretch til 2008, so it wouldn't seem to be injury related.

Shaughnessy was a big underachiever IMO, definitely top 10 worthy (career high rank: 11)

she did beat Venus in Amelia Island 99 so , maybe ..
she also beat Tauziat and Martinez in straigth sets at AO and Wimbleodn 2000 while they were in top 5 so I guess she could have her very good days

V. WILLIAMS/A. Sugiyama
6-1, 6-4

VENUS WILLIAMS: I believe that Serena and I are very polite, because that's the way our parents taught us. I don't believe in any situation that we've never been polite, gracious when it was necessary or unnecessary. But I believe also that most of the time when Serena and I lose a match it's because we beat ourselves, not because the other player beat us. I've been beaten about four times and there was nothing I could do, wave the white flag. But most of the other times, I've beaten myself, unforced errors. That's not only the case with me, but with other players also. The player who makes the more unforced errors usually loses the match. Sometimes with Serena and I, it's unnecessary. I think Serena and I have great personalities.

Q. Who were the four players, and which matches?

VENUS WILLIAMS: I was beaten once by I believe Sonya Jeyaseelan.

Q. Where was that?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Last year in Amelia Island. Van Roost one year in Filderstadt. I just couldn't do anything. Once by Davenport, where she just beat me that day, not where I beat myself that day. I believe once by Spirlea.

Q. Where was that?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Last year, Philadelphia. Davenport played too well.

Q. Where was Spirlea?

VENUS WILLIAMS: 1997 in Philadelphia. Those are the four times where I recall the player -- just what could I do, winner, ace, angle. On those type of days, you just have to clap your hands.

Can we keep Chakvetadze and Cornet out of this ???

They are not same case, like Martina Muler, or Urszula Radwanska...

no tape-smilie necessary, because these were all players who certainly had potential.
