How to pronoune Safarova?

I heard the umpire pronounce something like Shafafova, couldn't really hear it clearly, so anyone know what is the correct way to pronounce her name?

Thanks in advance

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

Something akin to sha-var-zho-VA.

Hopefully a czech speaker will give you an even better pronounciation

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

A Czech friend of mine told me how it's pronounced but I'm not sure how you'd spell it phonetically. Something like Shavazovah. Sounds like the umpire was doing pretty well.

Shocking that commentators get the pronunciation of so many names wrong. They are paid to talk about these players after all. You'd think they'd at least know how to pronounce Sharapova by now.

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

There are accents on the czech spelling that we dont see in the anglicised spelling

Officially, commentators and chair umpires adhere to the media guide.

Sharapova requests to have her name said that way, and in press conferences, you'll find most of the players adhering to english pronunciations. They've clearly accepted those transformations, whether they should is a different story.

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

In Russia commentators pronounce Sha-var-zho-VA. I don't get it why it's spelled Safarova .......

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

It's spelled Šafářová. WTA, ITF and ATP are just ignorant towards other languages.

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

We have had already a disussion about that: see there
It should be pronounced "Shafazhova", because of the diacritics on the 's' and the 'r'.

Re: How to pronoune Safarova?

It's funny hearing umpires and commentators saying Czech surnames. Too bad they're not all as easy as say "Rosol".

Even Berdych (seemingly easy two syllable surname) is messed up most of the time .
