Martina Hingis, overrated?

As of late, I have been reading of different threads. I think its interesting how different the views are when it comes to Martina Hingis. Besides her dominant 1997 season, she was pretty inconsistent there after (by her standards), suggesting she was nothing but a place holder in the changing of the guards from the Seles/Graf generation to the WS/Daveport power era. So my question is: Do you feel Martina is overrated?

I don't think she's overrated but I believe she's overachieved a little.

She's 30 times more talented than Serena and has 3 times less Grand Slams, so

No. She achieved what she achieved and people can either like it or be frustrated by it, but that's basically it.

Re: Martina Hingis, overrated?

Martina is underrated, not overrated.
She was such a pure talent, genius on the court, understood tennis like nobody else.
She could have achieved so much more if she had given more emphasis to fitness from young age.
She had big mouth and that's why she has many haters even now who love to downgrade her at any opportunity.

Re: Martina Hingis, overrated?

Overrated?

LOL, before moving to Switzerland at seven or eight she already topped Czechoslovakia's rankings for 10-year-old girls, frequently beating even the 12-year-olds. And those youngest-ever records still stand. Insanely talented girl.

But since 2000s, the competition got tougher and her talent alone was not enough to win more slams (though she held 4 consecutive matchpoints in the 2002 AO final) and she probably didn't want to work hard - and admittedly got injured - so she took her $50m+ on- and off-court earnings and withdrew from the tour.

No, she's not overrated, but she didn't work as hard as she could have.

I don't see how you come to that "suggestion" - Davenport is 5 years older than Hingis and won their first two meetings, so the assertion doesn't make sense there at all.
Against V.Williams there was no time at which either was dominant against the other. And even against S.Williams, the H2H is about even.

So . .. . I'd guess that your OP = "I think Hingis is overrated" And I'm sure many will agree with you and many will not.

Re: Martina Hingis, overrated?

Hingis always came across as a brilliant teen prodigy. Even though she lacked power, tennis greats acknowledged her talent and knew she's only behind Graf and Seles in 1996.

She successfully made her name written in history so early thanks to her talent... and a bit of luck in 1997. But soon it became obvious that she had it all too easy. As a naive teenager, she didn't know that she still had a long road ahead, the false sense of pride brought her to the beginning of her downfall. She would never fully recover from it as things didn't go her way. Tennis geared towards speed and power game, tennis slowly became a train that Hingis wasn't willing to catch. Her pride was hurt and there she went into early retirement.

But Boris convinced her somewhere in Wimbledon 2004 that she could at least reach the Top 10 easily if she decided to comeback. She dismissed that notion although her pride started to emerge again. Two years later, she came back and proved herself that her talent was enough to put her in Top 10, but not enough anymore to give her a slam.

So, no. She's not overrated. From the beginning to the end, she was measured correctly in general.

Re: Martina Hingis, overrated?

I don't think she got her maximum best out of herself. Way too young to retire.

She missed the Federer/Henin-like focus and determination to ameliorate the physical gap as much as reasonably possible (assuming that was her biggest weakness).

The little bugger was too proud for her own good basically.

A quote like that proves just how she is overrated. Her fans definitely overrate her, they make her sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread. Truth is 4 of her 5 slams came in 1997 (and January 1998 which is basically still 1997 as the change hadnt happened yet) when the womens field was extremely weak, on par or perhaps worse than the really weak 2010-2011 and 1982-1984 WTA fields which are easily the worst in the post World War 11 years. That isnt her fault, she capatlized on it, and she had to be playing great tennis to even have the success she did in that field. However she was also an early bloomer who didnt have the physical or mental reserves to last long at the top level. By 18 or 19 she was already on visible decline in addition to struggling with the emergence of the power game, and by 21 she was pretty much finished at the top level and had to retire.

Whether she is overrated, it depends on by whom. Anyone who suggests she is as good or Venus or Henin are definitely overrating her. They have more majors than her for good reason, they are just better players. Those who act like she is so far ahead of Sharapova, Clijsters, or Davenport also overrate her. Davenport actually owned her when both were in their primes from 1998-2000, and given her difficulty with power players she would have had major problems with the other two as well. She is a special player with a uniqute skill set but she isnt the goddess some people potray her as.
